In the early days of Republic, Missouri, gun sights were a necessary part of any soldier's arsenal. The town was founded in 1836 by Mormons fleeing to Missouri from Utah. The Mormons had built a fort on the site of present-day Columbia City and began trading with local Native Americans. As trade increased, so too did the need for guns and ammunition. The first settler in Republic was Lorenzo Snow, who arrived in 1840. Snow didn't have enough money to buy firearms himself so he hired an armorer to make him some pistols and rifles. These guns were used by the settlers until 1844 when they were replaced by handguns made by John Browning. John Browning started making pistols in 1859 and began making rifles in 1862. He decided to focus on handguns because he believed that they would be more popular than rifles. His pistols became known as "Brownings". The rifle designs that he developed are still used today.. In 1872, John Browning merged with Remington Arms Company (now Ruger). This merger allowed Browning to create what is now one of the largest firearm companies in the world. In 1911, Browning created the .22 caliber revolver which became extremely popular due to its low recoil and easy control over shot placement
