Republic is a census-designated place located in counties of Missouri, United States. As of the 2010 census, its population was 5,873. The community is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. Republic, Missouri was a small town in the interior of Kansas in 1873. It had been founded by the United States government as a military post named Fort Leavenworth, and became part of Kansas when that state was admitted to the Union. The townsfolk there were not happy about it, and on January 14, 1874, they formed a local militia to protect themselves from federal troops. The town's first mayor was George A. Smith; its first sheriff was John Sibley; and its first school board was composed of Hiram Haggard, James Broughton, and Daniel O'Connell. On November 2nd of that year, the federal government took over Republic without provocation or warning. They installed William Ladd as their governor with orders to disband the militia and return all property seized from residents during the occupation. Ladd refused to do this, and on December 1st he burned down the town hall and arrested all its inhabitants. Most of them were released after paying £100 fines; a few dozen were sentenced to five years hard labor at Fort Leavenworth. The remaining citizens elected James Mize as their new mayor on January 14th of 1875 - one day after Fort Leavenworth reopened following repairs done by Ulysses S. Grant himself - but things quickly went downhill from there. On February 9th Mize ordered his men to burn down the courthouse while it still stood standing; on February 10th he issued an order forbidding any further public demonstrations against him or against the federal government in general; on February 12th he called out his men for attack while unarmed civilians were present; four people died as a result (the majority being women who had come to help); and ninety-six people were arrested for participating in what amounted to peaceful protests against Mize's rule (of which only six received sentence more than two years). Eventually Mize resigned under pressure from both Congress and President Rutherford B Hayes; Republic reverted back intogovernment control under Territorial Governor John Altman before becoming an unincorporated community once again on May 6th of 1876 ().
