The town was founded in 1836 by Captain James K. Polk and his wife Eliza Bledsoe Polk. They named it after their father Randolph Polk who had served as president from 1825 to 1830 and again from 1837 to 1840. The first store was built on the corner of Main and Third Streets in 1836. In 1840, Republic became a city under the provisions of the Consolidated Statutes of Missouri (1839). The city government changed many times throughout its history; it was first an village then a borough then a town; finally it became a municipality in 1907. The original City Hall building still stands today on Main Street between Fourth and Fifth Streets near where its namesake once stood. It has been used as both the courthouse for local court proceedings and as home to various businesses over the years including two grocery stores and three banks before being purchased by Bob Dole during his time as mayor in 1994. In 1955, Republic voted to become an open-air shopping mall which included more than 20 shopping centers across seven states with over $5 billion worth of retail sales that year alone according to figures compiled by malls research firm Mall Research Group Incorporated (MRG). George W Bush also visited Republic during this time when he represented Arkansas as governor in that state's presidential campaign against Jimmy Carter. After leaving office, Dole leased most or all of Republic's land back to the city government which renovated and expanded many of its facilities including new parks, libraries, schools and other public services until it closed down in 2001 following Dole's death at age 93 while living there fulltime with his wife Elizabeth Dole who continues to reside there today. After ousting Democrat Mayor Nancy McCarthy following protests last fall over her support for Governor Jay Nixon for re-election despite having no previous political experience or knowledge about state politics she appointed Ed Tomlinson who had been leading operations out of municipal hall since McCarthy's departure as acting mayor pending an election campaign against him should she win reelection later this year . Tomlinson resigned effective immediately upon becoming aware that he would be running against McCarthy but remains technically employed within Municipal Hall

Republic, Missouri is a small town in Summit County, Missouri. The population was 1,717 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City Metropolitan Statistical Area. Republic was founded in 1836 as a trading post on the confluence of the Arkansas and Missouri Rivers. In 1841, it became an independent republic with a president and legislature elected by popular vote. Republic was soon annexed by Kansas City and its residents were relocated to that city in 1955. The village of Republic has since been abandoned and its buildings demolished, leaving only a few foundations to mark its existence. The first settler in Republic was James Auld who arrived in 1836 from New England. He established a cabin near the present day intersection of Main Street and flashing blue lights Road (now Independence Boulevard). A year later he married Sarah Brownell, daughter of Deacon John Brownell of nearby Independence Township. James Auld died in 1840 after helping rear his two children while their mother looked for work outside the settlement. His widow remarried Soon after James' death Sarah had her second child with her new husband george Washington Poston who also came to Republic from New England but lived there for about 10 years before moving back east to his ancestral home near Philadelphia before settling permanently in Republic around 1851 when he purchased 320 acres located east of what is now Main Street between US Route 20 and US Route 421A/US Route 422A). George Washington Poston became an important factor in developing Republic as an agricultural community as he raised corn, beans, potatoes and other crops on his property until his death circa 1905 having left it to be used as a parkland today including several large ponds stocked with fish which are open during daylight hours for anglers looking for largemouth bass or crappie) As early as 1830s some farmers had been cultivating tobacco on land bordering Highway 66 just south of present day Oldtown which later became known as "Poston's Land" due to General David Dixon's purchase thereof from Ponce de Leon late 1800s For many years this stretch along I-435 freeway corridor remains one of largest tobacco holdings within metro Kansas City area
