In December 1846, about seventy citizens traveled from Nauvoo Illinois to TopekaKansas to observe proceedings at Washington D.C., where President James Kansa had just been inaugurated as Ulysses S Grant’s second term began on January 6th following his election as president four months earlier on November 4th.
