Republic is a small town in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2000 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1837 by Captain James Ketchum and his wife Sarah Cline Ketchum as Republic Point on the confluence of the rivers Vieques and Des Peres (now known as Soulard). The name comes from a Revolutionary War song, "The Ballad of Independence," which featured the line "From republic to empire." Captain Ketchum had come to America from England in 1798 with his wife Sarah and their two young children James and Sally; he had married her while she still held citizenship in her home country of France. They first settled down on a farm west of present-day Republic but soon moved to an area east of town where they built a log cabin. In 1837 they became owners or managers of what would become one of Missouri's most important Native American tribes, the Potawatomi Nation, through marriage alliances with other chiefdoms across that state. In 1839 Captain Ketchum bought 640 acres (2 km²) along the Vieques River from Captured Father Ignace Dupont for $1 per acre ($2400/km²). This land formed what is now Republic’s core business district – its downtown square today is named after him: Captain James Ketchum Square. He also donated 8 acres (3 ha) near present-day Republic High School to be used as a public square; this parcel also forms today's eastern border of City Park (or Old Town), which includes much of what remains today of Captain Jakes' original settlement including most likely his log cabin which still stands just south side current Uptown Boulevard). In 1840 Revolt against Spanish rule results in French forces landing on Long Island in violation OF Spain's exclusive claim to that territory! At this point Mexico claims all New Spain – so France takes advantage by annexing both longitudes into its own domain! However when news arrives back home about this invasion Texas Ranger Josiah Gregg has already made contact with General Sam Houston who agrees to help retake Louisiana for Mexico! On October 25th 1840 Mexican Admiral Don Francisco del Río de la Hoz Attacks our frontiers posts and captures our only source for food & water! Our very brave men offer themselves up as prisoners but they are all massacred leaving only 3 survivors who return home & form our provisional government led by Captains John Cook & Pierre Coffin...This short lived government quickly falls apart due to lack Of funds & military support however some items like cannons remain until finally being surrendered by us at Battle Of Pueblo Bridge on December 8th 1840
Republic was founded in 1821 by James K. Polk, who became the first president of the United States after being elected as a candidate on the Republican party ticket. The town, located in Jackson County, Missouri, was named for Polk and his wife Clara. Republic grew rapidly due to its location within easy reach of Kansas City and other major cities. In 1865, during the American Civil War, Republic sided with the Union side and supported Abraham Lincoln's reelection as president. In 1868, when Missouri became a state following the passage of the State Constitution Amendment, Republicx continued to grow until it reached its peak population of nearly 5,000 residents. However, political unrest and economic recession led to Republic's decline in popularity over time. It closed its doors in 1902. Today, only a few remains of Republic: a cemetery and some remaining buildings used by local schools are all that remain from its heyday as an important community center in Jackson County.
