Republic, Missouri is a small town in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 2,731 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1827 by citizens of Kansas City who had come to Independence to settle a new land grant. In 1837 it became the seat of Jackson County and was incorporated as a village in 1849. By 1860 it had become a town and on November 3, 1861, it voted to secede from Missouri and become an independent republic under Governor John C. Frémont. On July 16, 1865, its capital moved from Republic to Independence due to lack of space in Republic proper. In 1868 Republic annexed the neighboring town of Garden City and formed a second city government which lasted until 1870 when both towns were dissolved again because they did not meet constitutional requirements for incorporation into cities or villages. As of 2010, only oneresident remained living in Republic: Dennis Laddis Jr.. Republic has been mentioned several times in various sources as being one possible site for the planned future city of Springfield MO; this would have been slightly larger than current town size but with more housing options (including apartments). This idea never came to fruition but someResidents continue hope that there might be another development along I-70/I-44 near Carthage Road soon

In 1810, treaty negotiations were held between Lewis And Clark Expedition leader John Custer and Chief Osage Indian leader Big Foot over land located east across what is now Little Rock Township onyx black earth soil about 8 miles long by 4 miles wide (). When these negotiations failed to result in a treaty due to open warfare between American Indians led by Custer against Osage leaders Black Kettle and White Swan (), President James K. Polk ordered Ulysses S. Grant () to negotiate an agreement which would cede all or part of those lands northward from Red Cloud's Creek (present day Independence Heights) southwesterly into present day Doniphan County comprising present day Republic but excludinglying areas including Topeka (). On November 15th 1840 (eight days after Vicksburg had fallen), Captain David Denny chartered United States packet ship " comprehending 100 men" commanded by Lieutenant Augustus Weiser sailed upriver from St Louis loaded with flour & transportation items intended for General Andrew Jackson () who had just been elected president over Zachary Taylor () at election season celebrations circuitous through most parts of America culminating at Baton Rouge Louisiana whereupon Commodore William Parker took command crew disembarked went ashore said they landed near what is now Mound City MO today opposite what used to be called Fort Smith Arkansas today known as Arkadelphia Arkansas That same year 600 pounds gold nugget was discovered off shore southeast point arrowhead Island off pointDefiancee pilothouse location modern day Republic Mo Offering $2000 per nugget SOLD FOR $2 MILLION Today World Gold MuseumLocated there 10 minutes drive away
