After the Civil War, Republic grew rapidly due to its proximity to Kansas City and its position as a crossroads for goods and passengers travelling betweenKansas City and St. Louis. In 1872, Republic became one of three cities in eastern Missouri chosen to become part of the newly created city of Springfield. The growth of Springfield led to increased traffic congestion in Republic, which made it difficult for residents to commute into downtown Springfield or enjoy their local businesses. In response, some residents voted to secede from Springfield and form their own city government within Republic limits – this would later be called Independence Heights. Today, Independence Heights remains a separate municipality with its own police department, fire department, schools (including two high school districts), and zoning regulations that differentiate it from Republic proper. Because of its small population size and close geographic proximity to other municipalities in eastern Missouri – including Kansas City – Republic has been able to maintain strong cultural ties with its surrounding communities even during times of economic hardship. This has included initiatives such as the promotion of traditional folk music festivals throughout the year, support for local agricultural programs, and donations toward community infrastructure projects such as streetlights or playgrounds。

In 1868, the US Patent #4,845, “An Improved Shotgun” was filed by the then named John M. Browning. The shotgun used a 12 gauge round that could be fired from an open-backed breech with a percussion cap on the barrel. It had a grip size of 3 1/2 inches and weighed in at just over 25 pounds. The patent was granted in November of 1868 and it saw first use in May of 1869 when it was tested on deer at Aiken Park in South Carolina. The shotgun became known as the Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR) after John M. Browning trademarked the name in 1888 with his new company, Winchester Repeating Arms Company Ltd., which produced rifles and shotguns under that name until 1899 when Browning Corporation merged with Remington Arms Company Incorporated to form American firearms corporation (AFC).
Tommy and I walked into the small town of Republic, Missouri on a bright fall day. It was a little over an hour from our house in Kansas City and we were looking for a place to stay while we explored the area. We found an online ad for a room at the Holiday Inn Express and decided to take it. We had no idea what we were getting ourselves into when we arrived in Republic. The motel had only been open for about six months and there were not many customers. The staff was very friendly, but they could not help us find anything to eat or drink. We asked around and eventually found someone who knew of a restaurant that served food called the Grapesucker Café. The Grapesucker Café was run by a woman named Linda who was very welcoming and gave us great advice about things to do in Republic. She also recommended visiting the local historical museum which would be closed for lunch that day, but it would still be open for visitors if you brought your own guidebook! We made our way down to the café and ordered some food before going back up to ask Linda more questions about her restaurant. It turns out that Tommy and I were both quite interested in history as well, so Linda introduced us to two of her most famous customers: Abraham Lincoln and Captain James Kansa. Abraham Lincoln is one of my favorite presidents because he has such an interesting story behind him – he was born into slavery but then managed to escape during the Civil War thanks to his heroism! Captain James Kansa is also pretty famous in Republic because he helped free all of the slaves in Independence County after they rebelled against their owner! Both these people are really worth learning more about, especially since their stories can tell us something about America today!
