Raytown, Missouri is a small town in DeSoto County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. Raytown was founded in 1849 by John and Anna Ray. The first post office was established in 1852. The community began as a small log settlement on the banks of the Des Moines River. In 1860 it became known as West Raytown after John Wray's ranch passed through the town square on his way to sell hay to settlers east of the river. By 1870 most of what is now Raytown had been built and named for Anna's father-in-law, Amos Dixon, Sr., who had bought land around what are now Main and South streets from James Kappler in 1834. In 1881 much of what is now downtown Raytown was burned down by farmers protesting low yields from their crops on land that had been annexed by the town some years earlier. Today only a few remnant buildings still stand from this period: a Carnegie Library (1888), an old mill (1893), and a NW corner store which has been reconstructed as an art gallery (1937). The following year white men from Independence Township started building a cotton gin near present day Northwest corner store where they continued to do so until 1907 when raytheon Co came into possession of that property and discontinued operations there; also other businesses located there before then have disappeared or moved elsewhere altogether including an ice cream parlor (1907) which closed up shop after several decades due to lack of customers; later still another grocery store opened here but closed within 5 years due to competition from larger storesjointly operated by two brothers who purchased it soon afterwards - Ernest & Vernon Weems; finally another grocery store opened here but also failed within 5 years because it became too noisy inside with all these new businesses! Today only one building remains standing from this era however that too is being renovated into apartments: 501 N Main Street constructed 1912-14 under contract with local architect Rolf Mahnke for Elijah Hite Company who were then doing business as Hite Realty Development Company - one half owner/operator until 1978 when it passed along to current owners Univest Communities Incorporated
