Raytown is a town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 609 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now Raytown were white men who arrived around 1810. They were bounty hunters who hunted Native Americans and killed them for their scalps and body parts. The first home in what is now Raytown was built by Isaac McGee in 1814 on land that he had purchased from a band of Shawnees named the Potawatomis. In 1824, James Henniker moved to Raytown from Columbia, Missouri and started a tannery there. In 1830, John Corder erected a log cabin on his farmstead known as "Corder's Grove". The first school in what is now Raytown was built in 1836 by Miss Jane Wiegand under the direction of Bishop Payson Hillman after he heard about an abandoned school located east of Columbia on the border of French Lick Township and Ballwin Township. In 1840, Henry Willard donated land to build a church which became known as First Methodist Church or simply "Willard's Chapel". Raymond Tatum bought all of Willard's property including the church for $1 in 1845 from William Willard Sr.. Tatum founded Tatum & Company sugar refinery on his property which would become one of the most important industrial plants outside Kansas City until it closed its doors in 1984 due to environmental concerns. In 1850, Aroun (Aron) Steele moved toRaytown from Hannibal, Illinois with his family and started Steele Bros., Merchants Tailor Shop & Grocery store which would later become Steele-Huber GmbH (). He also operated two other stores before moving into grocery Distribution when Discounter Stores Incorporated merged with him creating HuberGruppe AG (). After HuberGruppe AG merged with supermarket chain German Supermarket AG (), Steele-Huber GmbH reopened its original store at 417 S Broadway as German Supermarket Plaza IRT Arnoldsdorf KGaA (). With new marketing strategies focused more towards automated checkout technology (), this shopping center would go out of business within 10 years but remain standing as an exhibit building until its demolition in 2007\. This move into grocery Distribution marked the beginning of an era where downtown Raytown would see significant development with several high-profile businesses opening up shop inside giant retail facilities such as Target and Sam's Club . This growth could be seen throughout much rural St Francois County but especially so DowntownRaytown where many small businesses sprouted up along S Broadway alongside major retailers like Stein Mart/ Michaels/ JB Hi-Lo/. During this time period there also emerged a popular nightlife scene thanks to bars like Brasserie du Lac (now defunct) , Live Oak Lounge (now defunct) & Live Music Hall (now defunct). All three venues closed down during or shortly after 9/11 only leaving behind large vacant lots; Today these lots can still be found surrounding MidAmerica Stadium which hosts both football games and occasional concerts

In 1846, the town passed through a series of changes that led to it becoming one of the most important transportation centers in eastern Missouri. First, stagecoaches began operating from Raytown; then wagon roads were built connecting Raytown with other settlements near St. Louis; and finally railroads arrived in the town in 1867 and 1870, respectively. By 1900, Raytown had become one of the largest cotton plantations in eastern Missouri. The history of Raytown is intertwined with that of its namesake: Samuel ray. Born into a wealthy family on the outskirts of St. Louis in 1792, ray became interested in Utah Territory (now Nevada) when he learned about its potential for agricultural growth. He traveled there extensively throughout 1814–1815 before returning to Illinois to start his own farmstead near Carbondale (later Carbondale). When news arrived via correspondence service that President George Washington had been captured at Yorktown on July 4, 1799 –during what would be known as America’s Revolutionary War –ray decided to move back eastward into Missouri instead of joining his compatriots fighting for independence. He settled on a ranch near Lamar (later Lamar), starting a large livestock operation that remains one of the most important aspects of Raystown history today.
