Raytown, Missouri is a town in central Missouri, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The Raytown post office was established in 1853 and discontinued in 1936. The first settler in what is now Raytown was John Purdy. He built a log cabin on the edge of a small pond near present-day US Highway 50 and US Highway 64 about 1853. He named his new settlement after his father-in-law, Richard Rayboldt, who had come from England two years earlier to help purchase land for the town site. A few years later, Purdy's brother Amos moved into the village and began to operate a store and hotel on Main Street which became known as "The Bucket". In 1870, when Alexander Wessels arrived in Raytown with his family from Illinois, he purchased some land adjoining Purdy's store lot and started to build a sawmill on the creek that flowed through the village. By 1875, Wessels had erected five churches and three schools in Raytown - one of which still stands today - as well as numerous other buildings including a bank (1877), grocery (1881), physician (1883),othouse (1910) and cotton gin (1894). In addition to its economic importance as an agricultural center during the early 20th century; Raytown also served as an important military depot during World War I due to its location close to Fort Riley National Military Park (). In 1923, when Missouri became an all-Union state under pressure from Southern states following passage of Prohibition (), much of rural eastern Missouri vanished beneath waves of development favoring heavy industry over agriculture (). In response to this onslaught; local businessmen enacted legislation establishing what would become known as "The Town Plan" for downtownRaytown which called for increased housing development along with commercial businesses,. This paved the way for what is now one of America's most vibrant Downtown districts () complete with art galleries,, high schools,, theaters etc.; while also preserving many raystown businesses such as The Bucket Store & Cafe which remain open today!
