The Town of Raytown was founded in 1839 by Ulysses S. Grant and James Hance. The first store opened in 1841 and the first post office was established in 1845. The name originated from a family name that once lived near Raystown. In 1861, the community had a population of just nine people and two stores; however, it grew rapidly due to its position as an important stop on stagecoach routes between Kansas City and St Louis. In 1876, local farmers formed the Raystown Agricultural Society to improve agriculture in the area and build roads. The society donated land for a school which opened in 1881. In 1902, construction began on what is now known as First National Bank of Raytown; this bank became one of the most successful in Clay County and helped drive the town's growth until World War II when it closed its doors. In addition to its role as an important stop on stagecoach routes, Raytown also enjoyed notoriety for being home to one of America's earliest UFO sightings: On July 24th, 1947 – three days after Independence Day – witnesses saw unidentified flying objects (UFOs) hovering overRaystown while traveling southbound on Highway 60 east of town; this event remains one of America's most well-known UFO stories. The name derived from a nearby mountain called "Rachy" which was once used as an airfield for Civil Air Patrol flights during World War I. In 1922, the Healds donated land to establish a school district and Raytown became one of its schools. The original school house still stands in Raytown and is now used as a community center. In 1950, Raytown started to experience growth due to the opening of Interstate 40 between Raytown and Springfield Limestone townsite (later known as Lebanon). This caused many businesses and residents to move into the new town because it offered more than just rural farmland on one side of the highway and city limits on the other side. As traffic congestion increased along I-40, the expressway became known as "the artery" for Raystown residents; they voted in 1984 to make their own independent municipality within the larger city boundaries, which they did with much fanfare and support from city officials who had been lobbying for years for such a change. By 2003, however, traffic congestion had reached levels that made it difficult for people living within easy walking distance of I-40 to reach their jobs or shops without spending hours travelling outside of town; this led to business closures and final abandonment of the municipality by 2006 when Beloit took over management thereof
