Raytown is a small town in Hancock County, Missouri, United States. It was founded by the Lewis and Clark Expedition on July 4, 1804. The town became a part of Raytown Township in 1838. Raytown has a population of about 1,500 people today. The first rifles were built in Raytown by surveyors hired to map the future town site. The first rifle ever made in Raytown was a .50-caliber muzzleloader brought over from Kentucky by Wm. Cranch in 1864. A few years later, George Stephenson donated land for what would become the current community of Raytown. In 1887, Harland & Co., one of the earliest gunmakers in Missouri, began making scopes for use with rifles. Raytown, Missouri is a town in the Ozarks of central Missouri. The population was 1,534 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raytown-area micropolitan area. The first settlers in what is now Raytown were French Canadian fur traders who came to this area in the early 1800s. They built a small cabin on an east-west dirt road that led from present-day Raytown to Iuka, about 15 miles (24 km) north. In 1812, General James K. Polk and his army passed through this region on their way from St. Louis to Cairo, Illinois; they were looking for newly discovered land to build a railroad across the Mississippi River. When they reached Iuka and saw how prosperous it had become since these traders had settled here, they decided to stay and explore further into this new territory. This section of Raytown today was platted as a town by Jno. Waddell in 1845 after he bought 640 acres (248 ha) of land near present-day junction of U.S./I-40 and I-270 roads (now called Eads Road). He named it "New Town" because he wanted people moving away fromOld Town which was too dangerous and isolated! On July 4th, 1847, when most all remaining pioneers arrived at New Town from various settlements around Springfield County including Lexington (now Lebanon), Overton Heights, Decatur Heights and other places in central Missouri due to floods that year caused by heavy rains upstream along the river known then as "Great River Flood", many festivities took place including a performance by local musician/pianist Reuben Keyhoe at Mr.'s house just outside town limits; later that night large fireworks show over Old Town followed by drinking parties inside Mr.'s home until late into the morning! The original post office here operated from September 17th1848 until November 30th1849 when it moved south to Moberly with one exception – on April 11th 1857 there was an extra post office established here under name "Raystown" due to lack of space at Moberly's old Post Office! During most of its history Raytown served primarily as a stagecoach stop between Springfield or Columbia Counties on one side ofthe Mississippi River and Independence or Blue Grass County on the other side where passengers would transfer between steamboats moored up along either bank during high water days while traveling downriver which would sometimes exceed 100 feet (30 m)! Monday thru Friday only passengers could buy tickets online via raytownpublicationticketscanner@gmailmail before boarding any steamboat outboundbound from Springfield or Columbia Counties! This continued unchanged even after Noah Webster designed new passenger railroads bypassing this stop & starting service directly out Otter Tail Creek instead back then beginning May 6th1853!!!
