The Raytown post office was established in 1881, and served until it was discontinued in 1957. The first settler in Raytown was George Latham. In 1892, a lumberyard and sawmill were built by John Burchill on the east side of the river near present day Raymond Boulevard and State Route 159. This mill became one of the largest employers in Raytown with its trunk line running to Lemaystown on the west side of the river. In 1903, J & W Smiths built a flour mill on Cedar Street just north of present day Raymond Boulevard about 2 miles west of downtown Raytown. They also erected a warehouse for storage purposes on what is now First National Bank Building lot which still stands today next to Third Avenue South across from Northwoods Shopping Center off I-270 exit 12A (exit 13B if you are driving south). In 1907 Haggerty & Wagner built a grocery store and log cabin restaurant at what is now Fourth Street and Raymond Boulevard about 2 miles north-northwest of downtown Ray Town In 1916Union Carbide Company (UCC) opened an oil refinery adjacent to their other plants in Pomona Heights and Midland Hills east of charges that then local farmers had been making against energy companies buying power from them at inflated prices while they were being subsidized by state governments
