Raytown is a small town in Johnson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,817 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The first settler in Raytown was George Huggins. He and his family came to the area in 1839 from Kentucky. They built a log cabin on the banks of the Arkansas River. In 1846, John Aiken arrived in Raytown and founded a trading post on the edge of what is now Raytown Township. In 1851, Samuel Baucom established a dam across the Arkansas River at present-day Raytown for irrigation purposes. The townsite was platted in1868 by John Sibley and named after General Robert Ewing's estate near Ft Worth, Texas (now Wichita Falls). The name "Raytown" originated with its location on an old Indian trail leading to this wagon road junction point south of Fort Washington Landing onthe San Miguel River opposite modern Wichita Falls. At that time it consisted of only two houses and one store building which are still standing today within walking distance of each other on Main Street just east of Highway 35B between Walnut Creek Boulevard and I-435 northbound exit ramp - making it one stoplight away from downtown Kansas City! The original post office operated under this name until 1888 when it changed to "Kansas City." It has been reported that some early settlers were members or supporters of local Anti-Slavery organizations such as The Radicals or 2nd National Republic Party led by Abraham Lincoln!
