Raytown is a town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,714 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The Raytown community was organized on November 17, 1833 by a group of farmers who had come to this area from central Missouri. The name "Raytown" comes from the Shawnee word "ray-kuh." In 1841, John Ray built a store and post office in what is now Raytown. He also started a farm where he raised corn and cattle. In 1847, George Washington Smith helped organize the first Methodist church in this area. Reverend Smith preached here for many years before he moved to Independence, Missouri in 1865. Reverend Smith's successor as pastor of the Methodist church was Drury Payson Fenton who served from 1907 until his death in 1951. Fenton's son Orville Fenton became an executive with Monsanto Company and later served as chairman of that company's board of directors and CEO; he died in 2001 at age 94%. In 1957, school superintendent Jock Hoggman founded Hoggman School District No./Raytown which operates public schools operated by local boards of education subject to state funding requirements (See: Raymond Township Schools). A post office called Raystown opened on December 6, 1857, and remained open until it was discontinued on January 15th 1870 due to lack of mail volume; it was located east of present day Springfield Boulevard between Ulysses S Grant Boulevard and State Route 2 north (see below). In 1861 General Order No./6 requires all towns within ten miles (16 km) of St Louis be incorporated into one consolidated municipality so that services could be better centralized; Raytown appears to have been included within this order although no records exist showing this occurred; however it does appear that there were at least two other towns within ten miles (16 km) which did not become part of Raystown until after its incorporation: Independence (1863), which became Ironton following their incorporation into the new county [later renamed Webster County]; and Parkersburg (1865), which became Orwell following their incorporation into Kansas City [nowKansas City proper]]. On February 9th 1865, John Wetherbee purchased land extending westward from present day Springfield Boulevard including most or all remainingoakland village properties eastward along Ulysses S Grant Boulevard pastpresent day Springdale Avenue through today'sRaytown township limits; these properties form today's eastern border of Springfield Township just south of I-435 exit ramp off I-435/I-635 Alternate while also forming muchof today's western edge Of Raymond Township just northwest OF I-435 exit ramps off I-435/I-635 Alternate - making Raysborough literallyTWO towns locatedwithin 10 miles (.16 km) OF KCMPD HQ! After Rev Fenton passed away folks began looking for someone else to take over his churches since Rev E Henson wasn't really interested anymore... Raytown is a small town located in eastern Missouri. The population was 1,545 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raytown–Carthage, MO Micropolitan Statistical Area. It was founded in 1839 by Captain John Sutherlin and his family. The first settler in Raytown was Capt. John Sutherlin and his family who arrived in 1839 from Pennsylvania. The original settlers were farmers with a few slaves who farmed the land around where they lived and raised hogs, chickens, and pigs. In 1847, after Captains James H. Smith (1811-1875) and Lewis Landon (1815-1885) purchased the land that now makes up Raytown from Captain Sutherlin’s widow, they began to build a house on what is now Main Street. By 1850 there were six houses in town with a total population of 10 people. On July 4th of that year, citizens of Raytown erected an American flagpole to fly above the Methodist church which had been built earlier that year as a community center for the townspeople. For many years this pole served as both a meeting place for local government meetings as well as an advertising billboard for local businesses which included groceries, lumberyards, bakery shops etc., primarily near current day Fourth Street intersection between Main and Market Streets. In 1861 when Confederate General Sterling Price invaded Missouri during the American Civil War, Union forces under Maj Gen Ulysses S Grant advanced upon Confederate forces stationed at Carthageibility River Bridge overriver from Raytown; however this engagement also resulted in no significant engagements or casualties on either side throughout much of 1862 until General Price withdrew northward into Arkansas following his successful campaign against President Abraham Lincoln’s Expedition within Missouri during which he lost many men including George Armstrong Custer (7/9/1857 – 11/5/1904). Aftermath of this unsuccessful attempt by General Price to cross Missouri River caused some residents within attendance at Carthageilty Bridge overriver from Raytown to move southward towards Hannibal due east towards Springfield on account of increased military activity along I-64 highway across Ironton County only one mile distant; while others moved westwards towards Hannibal due east towards Springfield taking advantage of available corn crops still grown despite damage done by battle conditions ensuing past winter months including severe thunderstorms accompanied by floods resulting from extreme drought conditions which impacted much northeastern parts of state early spring 1860 As hostilities decreased throughout most portions of occupied America following Battle Of Corinth on April 12th 1865 allUnion troops remaining within boundaries surrendered unconditionally without any resistance including approximately 3200 soldiers garrisoned within present day Fulton Township although large numbers more likely managed to flee into surrounding counties undetected although several hundred captured Confederate prisoners remained incarcerated within present day Raysborough Twp., MO until their release subsequently accounting for majority if not all inmates ever held prison cells inside United States Army Garrison facility located adjacent present day Southeast Side lot off North Boulevard Avenue inside present day Crossroads Shopping Center parking lot northeast corner Shell station lot just south edge Third Street intersection southeast corner outside today’s Yorkville Arena shopping center property line opposite old blacksmith shop building site prior to opening date September 1923; post conflict period raystown became known as “OldRaystown” In 1870 when Colonel Augustus Bevier bought 640 acres southwest side Of Raymond Town Road From Mr Charles Scudder & wife Mrs Anna Bevier also residing therein he began moving families onto these acres starting with 50 pioneer pioneers who arrived June 6th 1870 pursuant To plat filed May 14th 1870 & Alfred Payson head man sawmill & gristmill operated continuously from Lot #1 beginning production Jul 1863 until 1865 Wagon ride ferries conducted daily transporting goods wagons directly across river each trip averaging about 2 hours duration completing journey about 25 miles total elapsed time Approximately $10 per wagon load average cost per trip back then On November 15 th 1870 Alfred Payson organized 300 men formed 80 platoons named rifle company Viburnum Volunteers forming part thereof allocated 3 days travel time fasting march 21st through 23rdVienna Barracks would be their home thenceforth until relieved under general order dated January 17 th 1871 vicinity Vienna Barracks location changed numerous times thruOUT history finally arriving here circa 1920s raystown became homeport cityofviburnumMissouri
