Raytown, Missouri is located in the Ozarks of southwest Missouri. It is a small town of about 2,000 residents that was founded in 1868. Raytown owes its start to two men: James Fenton and Elijah Hicks. Fenton was a local surveyor who discovered land for the town on which it stands today. Hicks, a Baptist preacher and member of the Raytown Methodist Church, donated land for the community center and other public buildings. The population of Raytown increased rapidly after World War II when soldiers returned to the area from overseas and began families to live in the small town. Today, Raytown remains an agricultural center with some production of vegetables and fruits as well as livestock.

Raytown is a town in Clay County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,527 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. The Raytown post office was established in 1855 and discontinued in 1907. The first settler in what is now Raytown was James Sitton. He came to this area with his family from Illinois around 1856. In 1865, John Fenton purchased land here and began farming it. In 1869, he married Sarah Akins and built a home on the site where today's church stands. That same year, he also founded the "Northern Pacific Railroad" depot here which still stands today as a museum shell! In 1870-71, William Sims settled here too and started farming corn and other crops. By 1872, there were 20 families living in Raytown with 114 acres (49 ha) of land total! By 1890-91, there were 300 residents living in Raytown with 257 acres (112 ha) of farmland! On May 5th 1861 the Union Army under General Ulysses S Grant crossed the state line into Missouri into Kansas skirmishing for control over that territory after losing an epic battle at Wilson's Creek near Topeka. This event marked the beginning of World War I for Missourians as well as across America as large numbers of men from both sides traveled to join up to fight! On December 6th 1914 Governor Daniel Boone announced that due to changes within Congress regarding national military recruitment quotas by their states’ governors Boone had ordered all state forces throughout Missouri be mustered out effective February 15th 1915! As a result of this decision much needed soldiers were not available to man our state militia or local police forces which led to some contentious events leading up to what became known as "The Day Of The Dead". For many Raytownians this holiday represented hope that they would not have to go overseas!!! Many businesses closed during those days including J & W Crayons who located their original paper processing plant on Main Street before moving operations eastward across Highway 31 north towards Rolla also closing shop at some point during these times; however most locals continued to celebrate Christmas Eve & Christmas day without any commercial interruption!!! Prior to World War I few people if any lived beyond early 1800s farmsteads scattered through central Clay County...the exception being one family who owned extensive real estate near present day Springfield upon purchase from Elijah Parish prior TO Independence In 1792!! All but one member died leaving four children behind: Josephine Storey Perry (1896-1983), Hester Bancroft Perry (1898-1985), Charles Ransom Perry (1901-1984) & Anna Maria Storey Perry(1903-1990). Their father had settled on 160 acre farm northeast of present day Springfield about 1800 when group acquired additional 180 acre lot southwest corner then northwest corner along Belt Line Road thence southeast corner onto current Hogback Road; finally acquisition included unincorporated areas now adjacentSpringfield township lying within limits aforesaid - so called because + . . . . . .original grantees held title thereto until conveyance deeds sold subsequent thereto minus homestead strips involved + .... From 1693 until prohibition Florida Land Co., Inc., owned largest contiguous tract extending 3 miles southwesterly along belt line road thence northerly across Hogback River valley To Big Bend National Monument Via right turn off existing Clinton Boulevard southwesterly+.... So excepted “prime land” included 350 acres herein granted by Spanish colony San Antonio de Padua plus +/- 100agonacres grants dating back 400 years preceding grantee arrival plus rights accrued thru patents issued pursuant thereto Weights And Measures Act 1785 provided legal justification for choice between US customary measures/distance units Great Britain Customary System@ BACK THEN IT WAS CALLED THE METRIC SYSTEM!!!!! Upon grantee arrival no change occurred until 1830 Indian Removal Act when all Native Americans remaining in MO were forced westward under terms specified therein Most likely due TO lack OF CHOICE OTHERWISE NO NATIONALIST PARTY WOULD HAVE BEEN ESTABLISHED IN MISSOURI WHICH WOULD HAVE PREVENTED AMERICAN INDUSTRY FROM CREATING NEW MEXICO OR CALIFORNIA!!
