The town of Raytown was founded in 1837 by John S. Fenwick and his brother-in-law, Amos Greene. The town originally consisted of only a few houses and a small post office. In the early 1800s, the area around Raytown was inhabited by Native Americans who used it as an hunting ground. By 1830, settlers had started arriving to the area and began building homes. In 1837, John S. Fenwick and Amos Greene purchased land in what is now Raytown from the Osage Indians. They named their new community after Isaac Newton’s Principia Mathematica (1687). The citizens of Raytown decided to build a school to help educate their children. The first school was built on a farm located east of present day Raytown Road. It served grades 1 through 8 until 1861 when it became the Raystown School District #1 High School and was known as “Big Sandy” until 1984 when it changed its name to “Raytown High School”
