Raytown is a town in Warren County, Missouri, United States. The population was 939 at the 2010 census. It was named for General James K. Ray, who fought in the Mexican-American War and Battle of Monterrey. The community began as a small farmstead on the east side of the ridge that forms the eastern border of Raytown Township. In 1892 it became an incorporated settlement. The first settler in Raytown was John Gentry, who arrived there from Kentucky in 1851. He built a cabin on what is now East Main Street and moved his family to what is now West Main Street about two miles west of where he had settled originally. Other early settlers were James Denton, Michael Carroll, Isaac Smith and others who came between 1851 and 1865 or later. In 1892, when Warren County was created within Illinois, its area included much of present-day Missouri; so by order of the state legislature, Raytown became a part of that county. In 1915 it lost its township status but retained its name because it lies within one mile (1 km) of both Springfield and St Louis City limits within Illinois Obedience to this order no longer applies to residents or businesses located inside Missouri's state line which are located outside the city limits encompassing Springfield Municipal District.' In recent years much development has taken place in Raytown with several new subdivisions developed including: Sunrise Meadows subdivision on State Route 158 just east of town center; Foreman Lakes subdivision on Highway 63 just south of town center; Viking Ridge subdivision near Interstate 55 Exit 341 about midway between town center and Sunrise Meadows subdivision; Clearwater Estates subdivision off Old US 64 northwest corner just northeast of town center; Aspen Place subdivisions off I-55 Exit 346 about 1/4 mile southeast from downtown Raytown'; many more are under construction or still being planned as raystownonline reports
Raytown was founded in 1836 by a group of farmers from Illinois. The town was named for General James Orderly Clay, who had led the American forces in the Battle of Pea Ridge. The town grew rapidly, and by 1840 it had a population of over 100 people. In 1846, Raytown became the capital of Missouri.
