Raytown is a small town located in Ray County, Missouri, United States. The population was 715 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The Raytown post office was established in 1882, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1992. The first settler in what is now Raytown was John Aitken who came to the area around 1834. He named his land "Aitken's Fork." In 1872, David Stephenson purchased 640 acres of land from John Aitken for $1,000. Stephenson built a cabin and called his settlement "Stevenson's Fork". The community developed slowly until 1907 when George Wills bought 8 acres of land west of Stevenson's Fork for $3 per acre. Wills built a large log home and called it "Willsburg". In 1911, he sold the home to Jancis Willoughby for $10 per acre which made Willisburg the largest and most populous development in Raytown at that time. In 1936, Don Everhart arrived from Russell Springs with his family to open an agricultural store on Williamson Road which became known as Everhart's Valley Grocery Company. The community continued to grow rapidly during World War II with many new homes being constructed along Williamson Road including ones by Harry Siever and Royce Welchman which remain standing today as part of the historical district known as Old Raytown Square. Although not directly related to war-time activity, Old Raytown Square has become symbolically important to local residents because of its proximity to both government buildings as well as military funerals that took place there during World War II (the graves can still be seen behind the Tree House restaurant). In 1951, Robert Eisner bought 1/4 mile east of Williamson Road from Harry Siever for $5 per acre which made him one of the first developers in town and also introduced ice skating into what would become known as “Old Raystown” during this time period; however it wasn’t until 1973 when an addition were added – Chipper’s Chinese Restaurant – giving village center its current appearance! Ray Town Hall was completed in 1942 by members of the Army Corps Of Engineers while they were working on nearby Fort Riley; it served as their headquarters while they were stationed here throughout World War II. In 1945 after cessation of hostilities Camp Hill Elementary School opened within walking distance from Town Hall providing education opportunities through grades K-8 for all servicemen living or visiting RayTown prior or during their stay at Ft Riley or camp outside town; Camp Hill closed circa 1954 due primarily to lack funding although portions may have been utilized by local high school students concurrent with classes offered by other schools within Ft Riley campus since then… thus perpetuating this unique feature & history!
