Raytown is a town in Ray County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,689 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The first settler in the area was Elijah Dickenson who arrived in 1836. He named his new community "Dickensonville" after himself and his father-in-law Elijah Dickinson. In 1838, John Pflueger moved to Raytown from Illinois and beganning a grocery business which became one of the most successful businesses in town. In 1849, Isaac Burdick opened a tavern called the Crowne House which later became known as the First National Bank of Raytown. In 1865, George Fenton built a mill on the confluence of Elk Creek and Missouri River which became one of Raytown's most significant landmarks. In 1886, James Sweeny started a flour mill on Elk Creek resulting in what is now known as Sweeny's Mill District. The post office was established at Raytown in 1888 and remained so until it was discontinued in 1953; however, it continued to be served by local deliverymen until that time.Beginning with Prohibition efforts during the 1920s, many businesses closed including hardware stores and restaurant chains such as KFC and Taco Bell which forced residents to rely increasingly on public transportation for their stays within town limits; however some raytown residents still maintain private residences within their homes for daily use while others continue to operate their commercial enterprises out of town locations during non-peak hours (such as Saturday morning).Raystown experienced rapid growth due its location just outside KCMO along Interstate 70 - even though much progress had been made towards revitalization over several decades prior to the city's incorporation into KCMO in 2000 - but has since slowed somewhat due various financial challenges including an overall decline in real estate values throughout much of southern Missouri while joblessness rates have stayed elevated among young adults living alone or working remotely (particularly millennials aged 25-34).
