Raytown is a small town located in western Missouri. The population was 5,469 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raytown, MO Micropolitan Statistical Area. The area that now includes Raytown was first developed as a fur-trading post by the Menard family in the 1820s. When their holdings were sold to Captain James Kapp in 1828, he founded what is now known as Kapp's Fort on the present site of Raytown. A trading post and general store were built here until about 1840, when construction began on a courthouse and jail. The first courthouse in Missouri was built here in 1845, and it served as the seat of justice for all of eastern Randolph County until it burned down in 1851. A new courthouse was built in 1895 on what is now Main Street (now US Route 66). It served as the seat of justice for Randolph County until it burned down again in 1923. The building was replaced by a new one which still stands today, and it has been used as an elementary school since 1978. In 1865, John Pendergrass established himself as a farmer near Raytown with some thirteen acres of land he had acquired from his father-in-law, General Nathan Bedford Forrest. He became well known for his production of cornmeal which he exported to Great Britain and other parts of Europe during this time period. In 1922, Pendergrass donated 1/4 mile (0.8 km) east of his original farmstead along US Route 66 to become part of what is now called Forrest Park Regional Airport; this airport serves much of west Randolph County today including Raytown proper. After World War II ended, many farmers moved away from farming due to economic hardship; however, some continued to live near or within walking distance of downtown Raystown through various means such as buying plots or renting space from local utilities companies such as Streetsboro Municipal Utility District No.; this continued until about 1970 when most people either left or lost their homes because they could no longer afford housing costs alone after adjusting for inflation rates alone over that time frame! Some people who have remained living within walking distance include: Harry Sizemore (who lives just east off I-635), Elmer Smith (who lives south side off Elmira Rd.), Mrs.(Linda) Weems (whose father bought her house across from I-635 & US 65 just south side Rte 67), Clyde Frazier (formerly Mr.) Hennessey's Furniture Store - currently owner Bernie Hennessey - who also operates Frazier Auto Parts across I-635 & US 65 just south side Rte 67; Garry Gilmore who has lived next door to Sizemore since before partitioning between them Lots 3 & 4 along Rte 67; Chas Wiegand whose family has been living northeast corner lot 2 north side Rte 67 since before statehood; Dennis McKenna who purchased house on lot 8E opposite intersection I-640 & US 65 back when statehood began; Marvin Meeks; current day owners Dick McAuliffe (& wife Kathy) and Jerry McGee (& wife Patty); Ned Donovan (& wife Donna) - all residents that originally resided east side off Main Street adjoining Slaughter Plant Road long before development started around there - these folks have always maintained a close relationship w/ adjacent landowners thru various hands delivered goods home weekend picnics every summer year round

The town's growth continued through the late 1800s and into the 1920s, when it reached its peak population of around 10,000 people. However, during World War II Raytown experienced a decline in population due to the war effort. After the war ended in 1945, Raytown slowly regained its former prosperity as a small community until it finally fell apart in the 1970s. Today remnants of Raytown remain scattered throughout several counties in Missouri; however, they are only relatively common occurrences among those who have been living near Raytown for any length of time.
Raytown is located in Clay County, Missouri, and was founded in 1827. The town was named for General James Ray, who fought in the Mexican-American War and then served as a United States senator from Missouri.
