Raytown is a small town located in northwestern Missouri. The population was 5,987 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raytown, Mo., Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Raytown was Solomon Hays, who arrived in 1830. Other early settlers included David and John Couch, both from Kentucky; and Isham Ladd, who came from Tennessee in 1836. In 1839, Isaac Wright moved to Raytown from nearby Phelpsville and became its first justice of the peace. In 1865, a group of men led by Hiram Peabody built the present courthouse in Raytown. They were followed by other settlers and businesses over the next few years until most of Raytown's residents had relocated to neighboring Phelpsville or Norfolk County. The last resident to live in Raytown was Alfred Averill on May 25, 1886. Raytown has experienced some significant changes since its incorporation as a town in 1879: it lost its railroad connection with major east-west routes after the Great Depression; it became an agricultural center during World War II due to increased demand for food products generated by troops stationed near Fort Riley; it regained its downtown status following the war; and it experienced a large growth rate during post-war prosperity as more people migrated into the area for work opportunities. In recent years there have been efforts to revive aspects of local history such as re-establishing community meetings and hosting events related to local history within town limits (such as PioneersFest). There are also plans underway to create a museum based on localhistory initiatives within town limits that would include exhibits about raystowniana (the culture and history of raystownians), microbreweries located within town limits, and open housesursions featuring historical artifacts from raystowniana communities around Missouri regional museums throughout the state (e.g., Springfield Museum of History).
The Raytown community was founded in 1834 by farmers and their families. In the early days, the town was a small, rural village with few buildings. The population grew rapidly during the 1830s and 1840s as settlers arrived from Illinois and other parts of the country. By 1850, Raytown had a population of more than 200 people and began to prosper. In 1851, settlers in nearby Bentonville began to settle what is now Arkansas County. They were motivated by the discovery of rich lands east of Raytown. As new land was discovered, more people moved to Bentonville and Raytown became a sleepy backwater. By 1872, only about 60 people lived in both villages combined. But things changed when railroad entrepreneurs decided to build a line through Bentonville-Raytown-Arkansas County. This new development created an influx of new residents who wanted to live near the trains. The population in Bentonville exploded while Raytownjson continued to decline. In 1904, only about 10 people lived in Raytown compared to 300 or 400 in Bentonville at this time! By 1950, however, raytown had begun to rebound thanks to efforts by its citizens and government officials alike. A new courthouse was built in 1951; a library opened in 1957; and businesses emerged that continue today such as restaurants and stores
