The town was established on the banks of the Arkansas River, which makes it one of the oldest and most settled communities near Springfield, Ill. By 1854, there were two gunsmiths operating out of Raytown: John Hogg and James Waring. In 1857, J.D. Stephenson opened a grocery store on Main Street that became one of the earliest firearm stores west of the Mississippi River. In 1865, John Prentice built a mill along the Arkansas River near present-day Raytown to produce flour for local farmers. After World War I, many farmers turned to using guns to protect their crops from thieves and raiders. In 1922, Samuel Colt began making revolvers here as well; this led to increased demand for firearms hereabouts and helped create what is now known as "the Gun Culture." The Raytown Gun Club was founded in 1907. It is the oldest gun club in Missouri. The club has been around since then and has built up a very active membership. Recent renovations have included new equipment and a more comfortable meeting space.

The current mayor is Donny Weems. Raytown has two universities: Southern Illinois University Carbondale and Northern Illinois University Edwardsville. Raytown is a small town in the Ozarks region of Missouri, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of Ray County. The first settler in what is now Raytown was Hiram L. Smith in 1837. He and his family moved to the area from Illinois after the great American Civil War. In 1881, John Nolen bought land in what is now Raytown from Hiram Smith and startedNINGER Land Company which developed much of what is now Raytown including building the first frame schoolhouse and selling lots for farming and housing developments throughout the years. In 1907, Hemanus Mudgett became the mayor of Raytown after being elected as a Republican to fill an open seat on the Jay County Board of Commissioners. Mudgett served until his death in 1933, remaining one of Carbondale's most prominent residents even after moving away from town during World War II and into Carbondale Air Force Base (now Wright-Patterson Air Force Base). Many people who knew him through these years consider him "the last mayor." In 1951, local citizens voted to change their name to "Raystown" due to its location within reach of many larger towns such as Springfield, MO and Columbia, MO; this vote coincided with other communities nearby adopting similar names within their jurisdictions following similar votes by village councils around that time period nationwide. According to The History Channel's show History Out Loud: A history survey (2009), there are several reasons why Raytown may have been chosen as its namesake: It had been reported that early settlers named their villages after places they had seen or heard about while traveling - for instance Fentonville Township went by Mount Vernon because it had been visited by General James Ketchum while he was on his way westward from St Louis; Mechanicvilleafter seeing a machine shop located there near where Main Street currently stands; White Chapelwas renamed Christian Academy due to reports that some members of that community were attending religious services at an academy run by Methodistsnearby; Mud Creek Crossing became known as Lee's Ferry because ferryman Lee Robinson used it when crossing over mud creek on horseback during those days; etc.). Some believe that given its central location - just outside Carbondale -raystown may have sounded like a more promising name than any others suggested initially . There are also references to raystown existing since before Missouri statehood which contributed too- maybe people felt like they were already somewhere close? According TOO coincidentally(?) all 6 original townships established within Ozark county got their start around this time too so maybe we're not alone after all? Anyway didn't stop me from naming my daughter Raysborough!

Ray, a military leader who fought in the Mexican-American War. In 1870, the town had a population of 350 people. By 1889, it had grown to 1,500 people.
