In 1966 it became one of only two towns in Missouri to be granted an exemption from state education funding because it did not have any schools that met state requirements for enrolling students in gradesK-12th grade. The other town was Pottawatomie Springs which also failed to meet those requirements On January 1st 2009 Raytown celebrated its 350th anniversary with a parade through downtown followed by a dinner at the old courthouse square

Raytown is a small town in Lee County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,912 at the 2010 census. The Raytown post office was established in 1881, and continued operation until it was discontinued in 1914. The townsite of Raytown was laid out by Colonel John A. Ramsey on November 11, 1871. It had a population of only 12 people when it first appeared on the map. By 1875, the population had grown to 30 residents and by 1880 it numbered 507 residents. The town began as a simple log cabin community with five homes and just two stores. The original settler were John Hinson, his wife Martha (née Ramsey), their son James Hinson, Peter Sheppard and Samuel Waugh all from England who immigrated to Lee County in the early 19th century seeking land grants that would allow them to establish themselves permanently in America. Captain John Fenton purchased some of this land from these men for $2 per acre back in 1879-80 after learning of their intentions to settle there permanently. In 1905-06 , President Theodore Roosevelt granted what became known as the "Ramsey Grant" which gave settlers access to hunting rights on public lands located near Raystown including an area that included what is now known as Sheppard's Grove Park off Highway 6A north of town . This grant allowed growth within the confines of present day Raytown due to competition from other settlements such as Hannibal and Sheppard's Grove Park became home to many businesses developing around shopping areas such as Jack Daniels' BBQ restaurant and Walmart before finally being annexed into Hannibal some time afterwards . In 1911 local physician Dr Jesse Murchison opened up his practice at 20 Main Street with four patients while also teaching medical courses at nearby Lamar State Teachers College during lunch hour allowing students within walking distance of their classrooms doorsteps for health care education without ever having left their neighborhoods or villages since receiving their degrees ! Today we know Dr Murchison Elementary School - still named after him - lies just east (and currently under construction)of Highway 6A south of town along Old Route 66 between Carthage Road & Hickory Creek Boulevard
Raytown was founded in 1849 by John and Sarah Ray. The town grew quickly, and by 1865 it had a population of over 350 people. The town's first store, the "Oasis", opened in 1869. In 1893, the Ray family donated land to the town for a high school. The school was built on this land and named after them. In 1954, the original high school building was replaced with a new one that still stands today. The town has experienced many changes throughout its history. After World War II, Raytown became an important center for coal mining and manufacturing. It also saw a rise in population during the 1960s and 1970s, when agriculture started to decline in importance and jobs went away. However, recent years have seen a resurgence of industry in Raytown, with new businesses opening up including a medical office and technology company.
