In 1875, the first gun shop in Raytown opened. It was known as the Gunsmith Shop and prospered due to its high quality products and customer service. In 1881, the shop moved to a new location on Main Street. The new location proved to be more successful and produced more sales than the old one. In 1887, the Gunsmith Shop closed its doors for good and became a parts store.
Raytown is a town in Ray County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,394 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Springfield, MO-KS Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Raytown community began as a small village on the lower east side of Raytown Township. The first settler was James Hickey and his family in 1821. In 1834, the town site was purchased from Nicholas Gentry by General John Swayne for $3 per acre (the price at which land could be bought and sold in that area). On November 12, 1835, Wm. Ladd opened the first store in what is now Raytown. A post office called "Raystown" was established in 1836; it was discontinued in 1849. In 1840, Perry & Company built a sawmill on what is now US Highway 64 between US Highway 24 and US Highway 55 (later I-640). This mill continued to operate until 1907 when it became known as the Perry Sawmill Museum and Park. The sawmill also housed a blacksmith shop where men turned out horseshoes and other crafts during prohibition years. Raytown's first school opened on February 14, 1840 under teacher Mary Carey Haggerty with 10 students from Lebanon Parish School District #1 who were moved from Lebanon to teach at this new school after that parish closed down because of financial difficulties caused by several Indian Wars fought nearby with no end to them until about 1870 when services were transferred back to Lebanon Parish School District #1 which then closed due to lack of enrollment but reopened under its old name in 1916 before finally closing again around 1980s due to changes within the school district leadership etc.). Raytown is a small town in Clay County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,822 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The first permanent settlement in Raytown was made on the now-abandoned farmstead of Cherry Grove in 1836 by three brothers - John, William and David Cherry - as part of a plan to create a new township. This early settler effort failed because there were no townships nor any means for residents to vote or hold office. In 1849, two brothers, James and Jesse Hickey formed the Hickey family farmstead community of clustered cabins near what is now Highway 9 south of Raytown on land that had been donated to them by their father-in-law John Pritchett. James Hickey became an agriculturist and died in 1865; his wife Chantal continued the farming operation until her death in 1893. A post office called "Raytown" was established at this site in 1853, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The current name comes from nearby Mount Pleasant which served as a center for trade with other parts of Missouri during this time period; goods brought into town would be unloaded at one end and sold at the other before being transported back out to highway traffic again
