Raytown is a small town in Randolph County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The first settler in Raytown was John Redmond and his family in 1812. The town was founded on the east side of what is now Randolph County by Methodist missionaries, led by Reverend James Waddell. In 1864, when Missouri took its final legal recognition as a state, Raytown became one of four counties within Randolph County. In 1922, an act of the Kansas Legislature designated all of Clay County within Randolph County as part of the new city ofKansas City. However, because Clay had no representation in the Kansas City city council and many residents did not move to KC until after it became a city (including many who lived in Raytown), most residents continued to call their hometown "Raytown." When Kansas Citrus Land Company bought out the last piece of land for KC from Washington Elevated Railway Co., they decided to rename their new company "Kansas Citrus Land Company" and keep "Raytown" as their name for all future products exported from KC (though they never actually made any such exports). Today's Raytown was platted around 1871 when James Waddell donated land to be marketed as agricultural land east of present-day I-435 and north of present-day US Highway 6. The original plat included a schoolhouse and two farms - one with five hundred bushels per acre (a yield that would have been quite impressive) and another with three hundred bushels per acre but only one farmstead: both were later subdivided into lots for development purposes. A post office called "Oregon Hill" was established at Raystown in 1872; it moved to its present location near I-435 in 1907. By 1888 there were over forty private homes built along Northwest Boulevard - today's main road leading into town - with nearly every family having their own garden or poultry shed available for sale or rent on those days when transportation wasn't too bad or difficult to come by. By 1930 there were only six residences still standing downtown; however several garage/residential buildings remain today including One Hundred Fifty Two Drive which fronts Pennsylvania Avenue Rd.; also on One Hundred Fifty Two Drive are brick ruins dating back to 1904 that may once have been known as Republic Hotel which served as a movie theater during prohibition years; these structures are now used as offices by nearby KFC restaurant employees
