In 1881, the first Arms and Ammunition store in Raytown opened its doors. The store was started by Nathan Bedford and his son, George. Nathan Bedford was a rifle manufacturer from Scotland who started selling firearms in Missouri in 1859. In 1861, he moved his business to what is now called the MarketPlace Shopping Center on Route 66 in Raytown. The Store continued to be run by Nathan Bedford until 1886 when it was sold to D.W. Mize of Independence, MO. Mr. Mize ran the store until 1912 when he sold it to J R Hutton of Springfield, MO who operated it until 1951 when it reverted back to ownership by Nathan Bedford Jr.. It was at this time that the Store began selling ammunition under the name of "Bedford & Hutton". In 1951, Nathan Bedford Jr.'s widow passed away and their son took over ownership of the business once again- this time with a focus on reloading ammunition for shotguns and rifles. The company has since been run by three generations of Bedfords- current owners are Johnathan Bedford III (the grandson) and his wife Deborah (the granddaughter). Today's motto at "Bedford & Hutton" is "Quality First." This philosophy is reflected in all aspects of their business- from production to marketing to shipping/delivery.
