Raytown is a small town in Boone County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Springfield Hills, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first human beings to set foot in what is now Raytown were two brothers, John and Jacob Hinkle, on July 24, 1819. They were traveling from Illinois via the Shawnee Trail when they discovered a fertile tract of land between Raytown and Springdale on the east side of theMissouri River. The Hinkle brothers began farming and erected a log cabin around 1830. In 1834 they built a more extensive frame house which still stands today (now used as an office). In 1836 two other men came to Raytown from Illinois: George Fenton and Zebulon Pike. They started a mill that produced flour for local markets. The town prospered until the great Kansas–Nebraska Act of 1854 caused an increase in freight rates along the river where navigation wasrestricted by ownership of rights of way through Indian Territorywest of Missouri line. This led to shutdowns of many mills in eastern Kansas and northwestern Nebraska; however, one major raytown Mill continued production until 1865 when it burned down due to fire insurance fraud by its owner In 1861 Union General Joseph Ewell invaded Missouri as part of his April 6 push into Eastern Missouri toward St Louis; while passing through Raytown he called for volunteer forces to suppress any slave rebellions ensuing from his march across county lines In 1865 all remaining mills closed down because there was no longer any demand for flour or other goods made from corn grown within those states followingincoln's Emancipation Proclamation Raytown was platted on March 3, 1840 by James Ladd about southeast of present day Springfield,. Ladd bought 640 acres (250 hectares) northwest of present day Springfield from Aiken & Company for $4 per acre ($140/km²). He named it "Raystown" after President James Kiefer Washington's 1792 purchase at Pompano Beach Florida from Spanish colonists who had tried to establish Hispanic settlement there before being driven out by American forces under Commodore James Kapp . There may have been others involved with this early development including David Mather who surveyed much surrounding area including what is now Ray Township in 1840 but nothing comes back immediately identifying them all
