The Raytown post office was established on December 24, 1853, and received its first mail from Lexington, Kentucky on January 1, 1854. The present post office building was built in 1914 by Wm. H. Lewis and remodeled in 1978 by his son-in-law John Gentry. Raytown grew up around agriculture because that's what most people did for a living until recently. Now there are several businesses in town including an agricultural research center (Raytown Research Station), two churches (Church of the Nazarene and First Baptist Church), a school (Eastern Illinois University), and many homes scattered throughout the surrounding countryside. There are also several hundred acres of farmland adjacent to town which has been used for growing corn, wheat, soybeans, flowers, cattle, etc.. The first settler in Raytown was Levi Pemberton who arrived with his family early this century from Tennessee. He started out as a farmer but soon realized that farming wasn't going to be enough to support them all so he decided to move into trade which led him to be a merchant tailor before he finally settled down as a farmer again some time later. This story really shows how things have changed over time here - back when it took generations for one man or family to make their mark on this community we now see dozens of families arriving each year looking for something new to do!
