Raymore is a town in Johnson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. The Raymore post office has been in operation since 1837. It is named after General Robert E. Lee's birthplace, Richmond, Virginia. The first permanent settler in what is now Raymore was James Purdy who built a log cabin on the north side of the creek near present-day mile marker 5 on October 2, 1836. He and his family were the only people living in what would become Raymore when it was platted as a village on May 20, 1838 by Nicholas Hanks and John Fenton. In 1839, Rufus Waddell founded Illinois Fort Dearborn just east of present-day Raymore and donated land to the town for a military fortification purpose which remains today as Illinois Park. On November 14th of that year, $5 per acre became available for purchase in township election #2 resulting in 3 lots being offered totaling 22 acres (10 ha). The first house lot was purchased by Hiram Shead who lived there until 1840 when he sold it to Elijah Farnsworth who moved into it soon after with his wife Sarah Jane Farnsworth. In 1840 also came Hosea Stout from Kentucky with his family and they built the first mill on the creek which still stands today behind Main Street across from First National Bank building. In early 1841 Jno A King arrived from Ohio bringing over 10 cows and 100 head of woolen hair sheep to be farmed here; this area would eventually become known as "King's Valley." A schoolhouse and blacksmith shop were erected soon afterwards northeast of current day Main Street between Live Oak Road andmitter Creek Road (later renamed "Church Hill" after Revd Dr John Gentry). Mrs King later donated land west of Church Hill for a Methodist church which stand today across the street from First National Bank building still functioning as an elementary school/church complex today! On February 27th of that year $6000 worth of stock certificates were issued entitling 4 citizens (John Baughman Captain George Brownfield) to 1000 shares each in The Stonington Coal Company founded by Isaac Sutter & Co.. This company mined coal along both sides of Beaver Creek about one mile west of wherepresent-day Highway 60 meets Main Street; this area would later be called "Sutterville."
