Raymore is a small town in Boone County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield–Branson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community began as a Quaker settlement on the banks of the Missouri River near present-day Raymore. A post office was established there in 1837 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The first settlers were farmers who raised corn and beans. By 1840, quarrymen had started extracting coal from the local hills, which led to increased demand for goods produced in Raymore. In 1849, two men named John Hargrave and Denton Hill founded Hargrave & Hill Coal Mining Company to exploit this new resource. The company soon became one of the largest employers in Raymore with its own mills and mines producing coal, iron ore, limestone, gas oil (later natural gas), wheatseed oil, cottonseed oil and other products. In 1865, an Act of Congress designated Raymore as a town; it adopted its current name on July 3 of that year. The town growth continued unabated through the late 19th century with businesses being opened up such as a grocery store and hotel before World War I halted most development progress due to wartime restrictions on mineral production. However during World War II both American Telephone Company (AT&T) and Comerose Mines Incorporated laid down wire line across much of Boone County making Raymore an important node within this network; these companies continue to operate today as AT&T Springside Business Park LLC subsidiaries of Comcast Corporation.) Raymore, Missouri is a small town in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield–St. Louis Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1871 by white settlers and named for Ralston Archer, an early settler in this area. The first post office in Raymore was established on December 12, 1871. In 1902 the name of the community was changed to honor John P. Raymore, Sr., one of the founders of Springfield and one of its most important civic leaders during that time period. In 1903 Raymond High School opened in Raymore and became one of the first schools in Jackson County to offer high school education. That same year also saw the opening of a grocery store in town which would remain a local institution until it closed its doors in 1984 after more than 50 years business operation. One significant event that occurred during this time period happened on November 3rd when Missouri Congressman James Meeks (D- MO) made his maiden speech from the Raymore Public Library while he was still a student at nearby Truman State University. This speech would later be immortalized as an example of how politics can affect everyday life outside Washington D.C.. Held every two years at that time it featured speakers such as President Grover Cleveland or Senator Tom Harkin from Iowa who would give talks on various topics around rural America including agriculture and small businesses etcetera. In 1957 voter turnout for local elections totaled over 98% with only 5 citizens registered to contest any positions!...It's all good here folks!
