Poplar Bluff is a town in west-central Missouri, United States. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield–Montgomery County, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Poplar Bluff was James Green in 1836. The town was named for Captain John H. Poplar, a U.S. Army officer who died during the Mexican-American War and is buried in Oak Hill Cemetery near Springfield. The first post office was established in 1838, and remained in operation until it closed on November 29, 1865. In 1870, Jno Auner began to build a sawmill on the bluffs abovepoplar bluff township east of present day Moberly Avenue and north of US Highway 63 (present day Old Route 66). This mill produced lumber which was hauled downriver by boat towing an engine to break it down into boards long enough for shipment by rail or wagon to be cut into planks at the various locations where they were used: Kiosk Mill (1871), Near Post Office (1872), Railroad Mill (1875), and finally Girdwood Sawmills (1902). This company became known as "Auner Lumber Company" after its founder's death in 1902. In 1935 the company merged with another lumber concern, Great Western Lumber Company, creating one of the largest lumber companies ever built up out of Missouri; however production declined following World War II due to competition from cheaper overseas sources. In 1984 Auner Lumber Company merged with Western Association Supply Co., Inc., becoming one of the last major American companies still manufacturing wood products utilizing traditional methods dating back centuries; however this also produced declines in sales throughout much of its history culminating with dissolution within 15 years following global economic recession which caused layoffs throughout most industries including forestry around that time including Auner Lumber's parent company Western Association Supply Co.). Today there are few remaining legacy buildings from when Poplar Bluff was a thriving community full of people working together towards common goals; although some brick buildings remain standing such as Girdwood Sawmills which has been converted into apartments since 2002 as part of downtown redevelopment effort spearheaded by Mayor Rick Fenton along with other city officials looking to revive old downtown values while new development takes root nearby like new medical offices and other businesses blocks away complete with light rail transit service just south across I-55 from downtown making Poplar Bluff not only an attractive place to live but also work or travel to without fear of traffic congestion typical across large metropolitan areas these days

The first settler in the area was James Mclntyre, who built a cabin on what is now State Route 51 in 1836. A post office called Poplar Bluff was established in 1841, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1861, during the American Civil War, General Robert E. Lee's army passed through Poplar Bluff on its way to battle at Pea Ridge. According to the 2000 census, there are 358 people of all ages living withinpoplar bluff municipal limits- making it one of the most diverse small towns in Jackson County. Residents are highly skilled tradesmen and farmers with a wide variety of interests and occupations outside of traditional government service roles such as law enforcement or public works; accordingly, many businesses located within walking distance of each other offer unique experiences that cannot be found elsewhere within town limits. For example: The local pizzeria has an outdoor seating area complete with fire pits that can accommodate up to 150 people for dinner; several sports teams play their games either inside or outdoors on city-owned fields nearby; and two large churches provide services year-round across denominations including Methodist (Church #1), Baptist (Church #2), Lutheran (Church #3) - all within five minutes' walk from each other by bike or footpath...
