Poplar Bluff, Missouri is a small town located in the Ozarks of southern Illinois. It is known for its scopes, which are some of the most popular and well-known telescopes in the world. The first scopes were built in Poplar Bluff by two men, Samuel J. Doane and James B. Webb. In 1856, A. H. Pease built the first telescope in Missouri using a mirror that was 8 feet wide and weighed only 10 pounds! Poplar Bluff is a small town in Platte County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,501 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. Poplar Bluff is located on the east bank of the Missouri River and is bordered by Bellefontaine to the north, Florissant to the east, North Park to the south, and Olivette to the west. The first permanent settler in Poplar Bluff was Jeptha Hinton in 1824. A post office was established in 1827 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. In 1859, a sawmill was built near present-day Poplar Bluff and became one of its few remaining businesses after it closed its doors for good in 1961. The mill produced lumber for buildings and other objects until it went out of business as well. A large cotton gin began operations here in 1865 from an old abandoned farmstead that had been converted into a ginnery by Elijah Parish Pinchot Jr.. This gin continued production until it stopped producing cotton altogether due to competition from more efficient machines coming online at that time. The first store opened up here on Main Street called "The Gilded Age Store" which served as both a grocery store and general merchandise emporium during this early period of development HERE TODAY! There were only 3 stores open when this photo was taken so there were plenty of opportunities back then for entrepreneurism! The Gilded Age Store closed down circa 1880 but I believe you can still find some remnants today (in building #5) across from Prairie View A&M University! 1:00pm - This is definitely one busy day at my local library :) Today we are reading about "The Gilded Age Store" which had quite an interesting history!
There has been a lot written on scopes, but very little on their history. In particular, there is very little known about the origins of modern scopes and how they became popular. Additionally, there is relatively little information available about the types of scopes available at different points in time. The first scopes were designed to allow hunters to see game in greater detail than was possible with other traditional hunting tools. The earliest scopes were made from wood or metal and had a simple design. They were typically mounted on an animal’s head or neck and allowed hunters to see targets up close while hunting deer, elk, turkey, chicken or rabbit. As technology improved, so too did the capabilities of scopes. By the early 1800s, however, most hunter-held telescopes consisted of sophisticated glass optics that allowed for magnification up to four times (although many still used smaller magnifications). This increased accuracy and clarity allowed hunters to track more distant prey in addition to seeing small animals at a closer distance. Additionally, new types of mounts such as periscope mountings became popular which allowed hunters to watch over their hunted game from a high location while it was being hunted. Although early hunts with traditional hunting tools were often successful, eventually rifles began replacing spears as the primary tool for hunting big game. As rifle rounds began hitting larger targets further away than traditional spear ammunition could reach (the large target then becoming easier detectable through telescopic sights), hunt[ing] opportunities diminished for men using onlytraditional methods including hand-held firearms and bows & arrows [.] Consequently by 1912 handguns had become nearly universal in professional rifle sharpshooting competitions across America

Poplar Bluff, Missouri is a town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Poplar Bluff were James Fenton and his family who arrived in 1821 from Kentucky. They built the first cabin on what is now the east side of town. A post office was established here in 1827 and remained in operation until it closed in 1865. In 1855, Daniel Boone located a farm on the south side of town and named it Boone's Ferry after himself and his brother James Boone. The first store opened here in 1861 by J W Marriott and functioned as a grocery for local farmers before becoming a general store that operated until 1911. In 1907, Harry Haggerty founded Haggerty's Chevrolet dealership which became one of the largest dealerships in America. The population had grown to 2,000 by 1930 when World War II began and peaked at 4,500 due to increased demand for military hardware during the war years alone. The Poplar Bluff School District was created on February 17th 1938 with a population of 3,059 students following an act by Governor Berrien namesing two new schools within its jurisdiction- Poplar Bluff High School (now known as Eastern Mennonite High School) and Robinson Elementary School . Construction began on both schools on September 12th 1939 and they were completed within four months with only ninety nine percent of their original funding having been raised! On November 5th 1939 classes met for the first time under this new name with Mrs Gail Pritchett serving as Superintendent . The school district had reached its current size with thirteen high schools (six elementary/middle Schools + six high schools), three vocational/technical Schools & eleven branch libraries! Leslie King served as superintendent from 1965 to 1973 while Dick Sperling took over from him during 1974-1978; during this time enrollment continued to grow slowly but steadily averaging almost 400 per year! In 2002–2004 Oprah Winfrey donated $25 million dollars to help build twelve new elementary/middle school buildings across five different districts including Poplar Bliff & Salem which would serve grades pre-K thru 8th grade; these structures were funded through her gift plus money contributed by thirty other donors! With all these new developments taking place throughout our community we can see how much growth there has been & how committed our citizens are to their hometown !"
Poplar Bluff, Missouri is located in the Ozark Mountains of northwest Missouri. It was laid out in 1836 by a group of speculators led by Ebenezer Scales, who named it for Poplar Creek that flowed through his land. The town grew rapidly after the Union Pacific Railroad arrived in 1855, and by 1860 it had over 30 residents. The town was renamed Poplar Bluff in 1907 after the discovery of poplar wood near its location.
