Poplar Bluff is a town in the Gallatin County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was named for two Poplars on its original plat of land. The first Poplar trees were planted in 1838 and soon grew so tall that they required a new tree-cutting tradition which continues to this day: during Advent (the season before Christmas), people from adjacent towns would come to Poplar Bluff to purchase logs for their churches' spindles because there wasn't enough wood available locally. The first store built in Poplar Bluff was a small academy called "Fenway" which served as an Laundromat until it burned down in 1954. Fenway still stands as a landmark today and can be found along US Route 24 near mile marker 138. In 1865, when Missouri became a state,poplar bluff residents voted to incorporate as a town under the name "Poplar Bluff." In 1870, they erected their first schoolhouse. Poplar Bluff is a small town in McLean County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,854 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield–Springfield Township, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in what is now Poplar Bluff were five families who arrived from Maryland in 1836. They built a log cabin on an old family farm and began to grow crops. In 1840 they moved to a new farm on the east side of the creek where they still live today. By 1847 there were 10 families living in Poplar Bluff. In 1852 the Arkansas Pacific Railroad came throughpoplar bluff and started construction along its line from Carthage to St Louis; this made PoplarBluff one of the earliest towns in that area. At first all goods brought into town were shipped by boat down the creek to Carthage; but as railroads became more important, trade grew increasingly along them and by 1870 cars had started coming into town instead of boats or wagons. By 1896 Poplar Bluffs had over 200 residents and two churches: The Methodist Episcopal Church (founded in 1851) and First Presbyterian Church (founded in 1865). In 1907 there was also a Baptist church established here which served as both a social center and religious service center for neighboring communities such as Uniontown, Stockton Springs, etc.; until it burned down in 1951. Accordingly, when Prohibition was repealed in 1933, business opportunities disappeared for many residents of PoplarBluff – including most grocery stores and other essential services like plumbing and wiring – so few people remained even after prohibition ended ninety years later! After brief experimentation with marijuana use during World War II as an emergency measure to relieve boredom among soldiers stationed at Fort Riley near Topeka ( Kansas), local officials decided that this type of drug wasn’t appropriate for civilian consumption within our community limits; however it continued to be used commercially until finally being outlawed altogether by state law effective July 1st 1957! Afterward almost all pot users either left or changed their name to "Marijuana Mike." As recently as 1984 only 3% of total male populations aged 25 years or older reported using alcohol regularly beyond social events; while 50% of female populations did so! tragically this rate increased significantly starting about 2004 precipitously culminating with over 80% reporting abuse within 2 yrs post-legalization!!!!!
