In 1876, Rufus Hennepin opened an ammunition store in what is now Poplar Bluff. He began shipping rounds from his store to various gun clubs throughout Missouri and Illinois. In 1889, Nathaniel Pyles sold his interest in Hennepin’s store to Benjamin Butler Smith Sr., who became the first person to open a Shooting Gallery in Poplar Bluff proper (now called Ben Butler Park). At that time, ballistics experts from around the country would come visit this new facility to learn about fire control techniques for rifles and shotguns! Phillip Bicknell also opened his business at this same location during this time period! In 1907, Prentice Mulford donated land on which modern day Ben Butler Park now stands. This property served as both an agricultural ground and shooting range until 1914 when ownership passed through several hands before being taken over by Robert Eichelberger in 1916ring(). From 1916-1927, Poplar Bluff had its own police department (!), making it one of very few communities nationwide with such an entity! In 1927, ownership passed back into private hands following World War II until it was purchased by famed firearms manufacturer Remington Arms Company(R) upon their return from war In 1949!
