Poplar Bluff is noted for its history and for being home to two of the world's largest poplar trees - the Poplar Bluff tree and the Gadsden poplar. The first Europeans to visit what is now Poplar Bluff were French traders in 1692 who named it "Popple Blanc" after one of their villages in France. In 1819, when Lewis and Clark passed through Moniteau County on their way from St Louis to Independence (now Kansas), they traveled upriver to nearby Poultney and called it "Poppleton". In 1821, James K. Polk became President of the United States and his brother Polk moved to Springfield so that he could be with him. They bought land near present-day Poplar Bluff for $10 per acre ($2 million today). When James K. Polk was elected president in November 1848, he decided that Springfield should become capital of the United States because Washington D.C., then under construction, was too expensive to build from scratch. He convened a meeting of Congress at which he proposed that Springfield be made the new capital and won over many members by pledging not to run for office if he were given control of government spending while living thereabouts. The city proper began growth soon afterward – primarily due to merchants who purchased land around Market Street and built homes on prominent hills overlooking downtown Square (theSquare today houses a mix of residential and commercial buildings). For several years following his inauguration as president – most notably during 1850s – President Polk spent summers at SpringHill onSpring Hill Creek where he enjoyed hunting large game such as deer or bear until finally dying natural causes at age 78 on July 6th, 1853 while out tracking bear near Wilson’s Grove outside modern day Greencastle Illinois just south east of Rolla Missouri . His body was brought back by train from Fort Scott KS for burial at Oak Hill Cemetery some miles north east beside modern day Topeka Kansas . After the war, many small businesses closed down because of lack of customers or competition from larger towns such as Springfield or St Joseph. In 1954, PoplarBluff voters elected Southerner Orville Nance to be their first mayor after he won an open primary against incumbent Democrat Chester Hays. Nance served two terms before retiring due to health problems in 1966; his son Orville Jr took his place for two terms until 1979 when he also retired due to health problems. During that time period, most ofthe old buildings were torn down and replaced with new structures shopping centers or light industrial areas around what is now Main Street east of Highway 20K south of US-24W . In 1984, another open primary caused by Reaganomics resulted in incumbent Democrat Howard Wofford being re-elected over challenger Bob Kapp with 53% of the vote against Kapp's 43%. Wofford served three terms before retiring effective January 3rd 1990 after 31 years as Mayor; his wife Nancy ran unsuccessfully for reelection twice during that time period as well as serving four terms as Vice Mayor until she succeeded him on January 3rd 2002 following his death at age 78 years old; Nancy Wofford currently serves as Mayor pro tem under current laws pending appointment by governor John Bel Edwards.. PoplarBluff is home to some unique features such as its own ZIP code (86534) which indicates it is considered an independent city withinMissouri government structurerather than part of Springfield’s municipal boundaries
