Poplar Bluff, Missouri is a town in the eastern portion of the U.S. state of Missouri. The population was 1,856 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. The first European settlers in what is now Poplar Bluff were white prospectors from Illinois who discovered rich deposits of coal and other minerals in 1859. They named their community "Poplar Bluff" after a small bluffs near which they foundered their boats while exploring for new land to farm. The town's first businesses were a store and post office established in 1861; a blacksmith shop opened in 1865; and a stagecoach stop opened in 1870. A sawmill was built on the north side of Highway 64 in 1876; it closed operation in 1951. The town's next two largest employers were an agricultural society (founded 1881) that raised hogs, chickens, and crops for local markets; and J H McGee Company (established 1895), which operated a grocery store, bakery, flour mill, carpenter shop, shoe factory, laundry and lumberyard until its closure in 1966. In 1931–32 Poplar Bluff was destroyed by a tornado that touched down near the town center and swept away most buildings within kilometers radius including churches (St John’s Episcopal Church being one notable casualty) as well as schools (the only building not demolished was St James Catholic School). Afterward much reconstruction took place with help from Federal Emergency Administration funds so that PoplarBluff could once again be a thriving community with businesses,. A few years later when Interstate 44 bypassed Poplar Bluff traffic congestion caused many stores to close down but since then many have reopened including KFC-I-Hokies Local 2082 which has been open since 1978 also nearby is another fast food restaurant called Carl’s Jr which opened up about 4 years ago

Poplar Bluff is a small town in Osage County, Missouri, United States. The population was 2,562 at the 2010 census. The community was named after poplar trees that are common in the area. Poplar Bluff was founded by Thomas Gates and his family in 1831. The first post office was established in 1832 and the name of the town changed to Poplar Bluff from Gates until it became an incorporated village in 1907. In 1957, when the Village of Rolla merged withpoplar bluff, rolla becamepoplar bluffs second incorporated village. In 1984,theVillage of Rolla merged with an unincorporated community called West Plains to form Rolla-West Plains-PoplarBluff which has since been renamed to PoplarBluff again. The original settlers were farmers who arrived around 1831 when they discovered rich land near what is now Poplar Bluff. By 1830 there were over 20 families living here including Thomas Gates who settled on a knoll overlooking the river north of town. By 1840 there were 60 residents living here and many more had moved into the area by 1850 when General James Ketchum surveyed this part of Osage County for Kansas Territory. When Kansas Territory was organized as a state in 1861, Gates sold his land to John Joplin who built a flour mill on it and named it Independence Mills after his home state of Illinois (now Illinois). Joplin's mill produced all types of flour but he stopped production in 1865 because he could no longer afford to keep up with demand from cities like Chicago and Springfield. After Independence Mills closed down, local farmers began producing cottonseed oil which powered local mills until 1946 whenindexingof U S goods made manufacturing Impossible so mills closed down all throughout America due to World War II I ncludes agriculture production In recent years much development has taken place within or adjacent toPopularto include: new housing developments (such as Gateway Townhomes), retail stores (such as Walmart) and restaurants (including Goudreau's BBQ).
