Poplar Bluff was founded in 1854 by John and Anna Ladd as a wagon village on the banks of the Shawnee River. The Ladd family operated a gristmill here until 1903. The first post office in Poplar Bluff was established in 1859, and remained open until it closed in 1912. The first store opened in 1861 and continues to operate today as an independent business. In 1870, Augustus Kelley homesteaded land here and began growing corn, beans, and other crops. He named his farm "Kelley's Cornfield". In 1875 he sold his interest in the farm to George Wirtz who built a large house here that still stands today. Wirtz served as mayor of Poplar Bluff from 1895 to 1899 and again from 1903 to 1913. Poplar Bluff is a small town in southwestern Missouri, located on the banks of the Arkansas River. The population was 3,813 at the 2010 census. Poplar Bluff is one of sixteen towns in Greene County and one of four villages within the greater Springfield, MO metropolitan area. The Town of Poplar Bluff was established in 1838 by two settlers, James Waddell and Solomon Morse. It plathered out from a group of small hamlets scattered around what is now Springfield Township. The first post office was opened in 1839 and remained open until 1860. In 1854, General John Fetterman laid out a new township called Poplar Bluff to take advantage of theelope's natural resources which lay just east of town on bluffs overlooking the river. The name stuck and today's incarnation as a village began with incorporation as part of Springfield on July 1, 1903. It became an official Village on November 3rd, 1907 when it annexed territory from neighboring communities including Lebanon and West Plains. When World War II began in 1939,poplar bluff inhabitants were drafted into military service and many left their homes to fight overseas. Many residents also lost their jobs during wartime due to bombings that took place throughout the area%. After World War II ended many people returned home but only a very few had enough money to buy back their properties they had sold during wartime - this left most residents who purchased property after 1945 homeless or without any means to maintain it other than through occasional repairs or maintenance work done by volunteer groups which often clashed with local developers who saw poplar bluff as an opportunity to build more high-end housing developments around its unique physical features such as rock cliffs running down each side of the road giving it an appearance similar to those found near Beverly Hills California . There have been attempts over years by some individuals or organizations who see poplar bluff as something special (e.g., preservation group "Historic Preservation League" )to try and preserve something about poplar bluffs past that has failed for various reasons such as scant evidence remaining about certain events/towns/villages that once thrived here; lack of money available for restoration; competition from larger towns along I-70 corridor; etc.; however there seems little chance these initiatives will result in anything substantive changing anytime soon given how entrenched current development trends are within this community

During the Civil War, Poplar Bluff sided with the Union side, but afterward developed strong abolitionist sympathies. After the war, Poplar Bluff slowly lost its population until it was destroyed by an arson attack in 1865.
