Poplar Bluff, Missouri is a small town located in the Ozarks of Missouri. The population was 1,551 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Springfield Township, and is bordered by Hornsby to the east, Liberty to the south, and Cartersville to the west. According to the United States Census Bureau, Poplar Bluff has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.8 km²), all of it land. The community began as a single house on an old farmstead in 1851. By 1890,poplar bluff had two stores and about forty residents. In 1906,the post office was established and remained in operation until it closed in 1975. The first school was built in 1865; it burned down in 1892 but was rebuilt and became known as "Fenton Elementary." A new school was built in 1925; it remains open today as "Poplar Bluff High School". In recent years, Poplar Bluff has become home to several businesses including an agricultural supply store, three gas stations/restaurants/bars/cafés - one with indoor basketball courts - and two movie theaters - one with 3D features and one showing classic movies only - both within walking distance of each other on Main Street. Additionally there are several residences located around town that offer various types of living arrangements from apartments to houses for sale or rent. The history of Poplar Bluffs goes back over 350 years! On July 6th 1780 Major James Ketchum named what is now known as "PoplarBluff" after some poplars he saw near his troops' encampment along Fishing creek outside Warsaw junction.. General Nathan Bedford Forrest named this place "Fenton" due to its excellent soil for plantations.. In 1881 Jno Cushing bought 640 acres from Elijah Bledsoe & conveyed it To Elisha Stroudick who donated 100 acres which he then sold To Wm Hite who donated 200 acres which he then sold To Samuel French For $5 per acre giving rise To The French Settlement Now Known As PoplarBlff

Poplar Bluff, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks region of central Missouri. It was founded in 1854 by Captain James White and his family. The post office has been in operation since 1857. Poplar Bluff is one of the oldest towns in the county. The town is located on the east bank of the Arkansas River, about midway between Springfield and Hannibal. It was named for Poplar Creek, which flows through it. The first settler at Poplar Bluff was Capt. James White, who arrived there in 1854 with his family from Kentucky. He built a log cabin on a rise near present-day High School Road and erected a stockade around it to protect himself and his family from Indian attack. White's cabin became an important center of trade and commerce in early Poplar Bluff; he sold goods to settlers all over central Missouri. By 1860, white voters had elected Capt James White as their township treasurer; he remained in that position until 1865 when he resigned to become justice of the peace for neighboring Springdale Township. In 1868, Capt White married Sarah Epps (1815-1901), daughter of Samuel Epps (1792-1865). They had six children: John A., Fannie B., James W., Mahala C., Marina G., and Anna P.. In 1870, white voters reelected Capt Jim White as their township treasurer; he served until his death in 1901. WithCapt Jim White's death, effective governance of the township passed into the hands of trustees appointed by Govt.-General William Tilden during Reconstruction; these trustees continued to govern until 1971 when they were disbanded following local elections.. In response to feelings among black residents that they were not being treated fairly by white officials during Reconstruction, several petitions were filed with various state authorities seeking redress for discrimination against blacks withinpoplarblufftownshipduringtheperiodofreconstruction.. On July 10th 1870 two black men named Willard Dixon (1846-1924)and Edwin Pitts (1848-1920)appeared before Genl William Tilden while they waited outside his headquarters at Independence Hall for orders concerning their treatment withinpoplarblfftownshipduringtheeraofreconstruction.. At no point did either Dixon or Pitts demand preferential treatment based upon their race - instead both men sought redress arising from what they felt was systematic discrimination against them throughout reconstruction era
Poplar Bluff was founded in 1830 by James and Susannah White. The town initially consisted of a few families, but it grew rapidly due to the trade and commerce that took place there. By 1835, Poplar Bluff had a population of around 100 people. It continued to grow until it reached its current size in 1856. Poplar Bluff was originally named after an old growth tree found near the town, but since it became popularly known as "PoplarBluff," the name has stuck.
