The original courthouse here still stands today and is used as offices for the county government. In 1955, due to water shortages in central Missouri caused by drought conditions, Poplar Bluffs became one of five towns within McLean County that were declared disaster areas. This designation allowed residents there to receive free food and other supplies from the county government as well as financial help for repairs or new construction projects. Today, poplar bluffs remain an important agricultural center with businesses such as local farmers markets providing fresh produce year-round; however, recent development has resulted in increased traffic congestion on I-44 near the town limits which can impact both physical infrastructure and quality of life for residents living within its boundaries

Poplar Bluff is located in Jackson County, Missouri on the eastern edge of the Ozarks. The community was founded in 1852 by Scots-Irish immigrants who arrived in what is now Jackson County. Poplar Bluff grew rapidly during the late 19th century as a result of its natural resources and its location on the Arkansas River. By 1923,Poplar Bluff had a population of 792 people. The town declined during World War II because of military production in nearby Jefferson City but resumed growth following the war. Poplar Bluff has experienced modest postwar growth, however, and currently contains only 455 residents. The town was named for two poplars that were found near the original settlement. The first poplar tree to be grown in PoplarBluff was erected by John Fenton in 1853. Although it failed to fruit, this tree helped spur further development within the town. Over time, other trees were planted around town and eventually became so important that they were placed on public registry. Today, many of these trees still stand; some even have been grafted onto larger specimens! The early settlers who established Poplar Bluff were primarily Scottish-Irish immigrants who arrived from County Clare in Ireland during the mid 1840s. Many of these menial laborers began working on land owned by wealthy farmers in western Missouri before moving eastward into Illinois and then Kansas Territory (now Oklahoma). Upon their arrival at what is now Poplar Bluff, these men likely encountered harsh weather conditions which may have contributed to their decision to settle here rather thancontinue traveling across harsh terrain or engaging with hostile Native Americans! Although initial attempts at producing food were not successful, this did not stop those involved from exploring local resources such as coal and oil which would become key factors later on whenpopler bluffsoil well opened up! Although initially unsuccessful due to low quality coal and difficult work schedules,these newfangled technologies soon proved themselves essential for industry within Missouri!
