In 1853, John Denny founded a sawmill on the bluffs overlooking the river at what is now known as Denny's Mill Park. By 1870, there were stores, schools and a post office in Poplar Bluff township. In1883, General James Hays surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant at Fort Haysville after a three-month siege. Hays was leading an army north to attack Lawrence County while Grant led an army south to drive him out of Kansas

Poplar Bluff is a town in the U.S. state of Missouri, located on the border of Clinton and Truman counties. The population was 1,695 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in what became Poplar Bluff was James Hickey, who arrived in 1825. He named his land "Poplar Bluff" after a poplar tree he saw near his farmstead on the bluffs overlooking river Limestone Creek. By 1828, Hickey had built a cabin and began to cultivate corn and potatoes on his farmstead which he named "Hickey's Corners". In 1830, Hickey married Martha Jane McCullough (1807-1881). They had six children: James (1831-1912), Johnathan (1833-1900), Sarah (1835-1902), Submit (1837-1920), Ebenezer (1839-1915) and Margaret Jane ("Maggie")( 1840-1920). In 1836, Jno. Hickey moved to an area now known as Poplar Bluff because of problems with malaria brought about by mosquitoes that could not survive in high altitudes like those in Kansas City where he lived before moving to Poplar Bluff. There were few trees available for lumbering so instead of building houses out of logs, settlers erected log cabins with side gables or longhouses made from split logs with eaves overhanging eaves for insulation against cold winter nights or hot summer days; these buildings served as residences until post office construction began around 1870 when all dwellings were replaced by modern brick buildings This early housing pattern continued into the 20th century with similar architecture being encountered throughout rural Missouri including Poplar Blff although many variations such as reinforced concrete walls or gable roofs have been seen . In 1838, James Hickey's son Ebenezer inherited his father's land which extended from what is now PoplarBluff northward to Iuka County and eastward to Hartland County including parts of Clinton and Truman Counties today but never reached beyond what is now called "Hickey’s Corners". Ebenezer developed a tobacco plantation at some point between 1838–41 which yielded two hundred acres of land that became known as "Old Ebeneezer" later renamed “Ebenezer’s Mill". A post office called Old Ebeneezer was established there in 1840 under the name "Hickey's Post Office", serving both Old Ebeneezar mill district and adjacent Clinton County until it was discontinued in 1907 due to inadequate mail service there even though it still stands today according to historical records . After ebenezers mill closed down circa 1907 an additional sawmill also operated nearby for many years but finally went out of business around 1930 . From its inception until about 1930 there were three sawmills operating within one mile square around Old Ebeneezar mill - this set an important precedent for future large scale timber mills operating within small towns across rural Missouri during this time period . At its peak production Old Ebeneeder produced up to sixty thousand dollars worth of lumber per day according to local historians however by 1950 only twenty five thousand dollars worth was left remaining from its operations originally .Today just over one acre remains total productive farmland surrounding Old Ebeneezar Mill while less than one tenthousand pounds per year leaves old ebeenzers mill effectiveproductive structure remaining
