Gun targets have been a part of the poplar Bluff community for many years. The first target was shot in 1871 by early settlers, who used an old cannonball to hit a large tree near the present day elementary school. A second target area was developed east of town on private property. A permanent target range was constructed in 1922 and has been used ever since. In 1974, the Missouri State Rifle Association donated land to the town for a gun range and shooting facility. The building currently houses the Poplar Bluff Historical Society and Museum. The use of firearms as toys has been around since at least 1800, when Dutch settlers brought pistols and cannons back from England. One theory suggests that early toy shooters may have learned how to shoot from grownups or experienced soldiers stationed in their towns or villages. It is not clear, but it is likely that children enjoyed using guns as targets for practice during those days before there were any firearms available to civilians. Poplar Bluff, Missouri is a small town located in Clay County, Missouri on the banks of the Poplar River. The community was founded in 1847 by Scots-Irish immigrants who came to America to work on the railroad. The Scottish-Irish were successful farmers and their descendants continue to live in Poplar Bluff today. The first settler in Poplar Bluff was John Pritchard, who arrived in 1847. He built a log cabin on the bank of the river and named it "Pleasant Grove." Other early settlers included Alexander Johnston and his family, James McGillivray and his family, Michael Dolan and his family, Archibald Smyth and his family,John McDermott and his family,and Peter Costigan. One of the most important events that took place in Poplar Bluff occurred when the Iowa Railroad reachedpoplar bluff from east to west in 1849. This event helped make PoplarBlUFF an important part of American history. In 1853, John Pritchard died at Pleasant Grove leaving behind him two children: Patrick (1854-1935) and Sarah (1858-1951). Patrick became a successful farmer while Sarah continued to live at Pleasant Grove until her death in 1951. She is buried at Pleasant Grove Cemetery. In 1923 Mary Jane Bagley married Patrick's son Donald Bagley who also became a successful farmer. Donald Bagley is buried at Pleasant Grove Cemetery with his wifeMary Jane Bagley. It is interesting to note that all five members oftheBagleys are buried together as one group under one name which indicates howimportant their farmstead was to them during their time hereon earth.- Dennis Wirths
