Poplar Bluff, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks of central Missouri. The population was 9,353 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Farmington, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. Poplar Bluff is located on State Route 128, about 15 miles (24 km) southeast of Springfield and 25 miles (40 km) northeast of Columbia. The first settler in what is now Poplar Bluff was James Fenton in 1836. He named his holdings "Fenton's Ferry" after himself and his brother-in-law James Fenton II. A post office called Poplar Bluff was established in 1841, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1959. In 1865, General John Ewing built Fort Sumter near present day Poplar Bluff to protect settlers from slave raids by Confederate forces during the American Civil War. A school was founded at Poplar Bluffs in 1869 by Mrs. Martha Ladd Garvin and Mr. Lewis Hinton; it continued operation until 1927. The first high school in Springfield opened on December 1, 1889; however, it closed due to financial trouble only two years later and did not reopen until 1926 under new management that same year by Drs.–Mrs.(?) Wistar and Mrs.? Prentice Morrissey with funds raised by a local citizens' committee which also erected a local grocery store on Main Street across from the original school building which served as its cornerstone In 1915 Drs.–Mrs.? Wistar reopened Hope School for Girls as an all-girls public schools program after Hope Academy closed down due to lack of finances at that time ; Hope School operated until 1974 when it became Washington University–Springfield . That same year Katusa High School opened for students grades 9 through 12 adjoining Washington University–Springfield . There have been several name changes over the years including:Adams County High School (1921), Highland Park High School (1927), Elmwood Senior High School (1930), Stoneman Valley Senior High School (1934), Huntingdon Junior/Senior High Schools (1950/51), Washburn Junior/SeniorHigh Schools (1959/60) as well as many renaming changes throughout history associated with various facilities such as: Adams County Vocational Technical Center(1972); Central Illinois Television Service Station(1981); Post Office Services Building(1993); Sheridan County Courthouse Annex(2000). In recent years there has been talk about reopening old Hope or other defunct schools within the town limits but no action has yet been taken

The community was founded in 1836 by a group of settlers who arrived from Illinois and were seeking to find a new home after being forced out of their original land. Poplar Bluff became known for its poplar trees which are used to produce lumber. In 1907, the Poplar Bluff Lumber Company was formed and continues to be one of the most successful businesses in the town today. Since it's founding, Poplar Bluff has been home to many prominent people including three US presidents, two governors and several members of Congress. One notable resident is former President George H. W Bush who lived here during his childhood years before moving on to college at Amherst College in Massachusetts. Poplar Bluff also contains a number of restaurants and cafes as well as an indoor swimming pool and basketball arena which have all helped support the local economy over the years.
Poplar Bluff was a small town in southwestern Missouri, located on the east bank of the Arkansas River. The community was founded in 1827 by John and Anna Nicholson, who named it for poplar trees that they saw growing near their farmstead. Poplar Bluff grew rapidly after the opening of the railroad to nearby Great Bend in 1867, and by 1880 it had a population of around 100 people. Its only store, which opened in 1884, failed within five years. In 1886, Poplar Bluff merged with neighboring village of Cedar Rapids to form Cedar Rapids-Poplar Bluffs Township. After World War I,poplar bluffs lost some of its importance when Cedar Rapids became an industrial center. However, it continued to maintain a small but vibrant community until its closure in the late twentieth century.
