Gun hammer history in Poplar Bluff, Missouri began with the first gun hammers in 1857. These were small, crude hammers that consisted of a piece of hardwood about two and one-half inches long, a round metal head about one and one-quarter inches wide, and a handle three or four inches long. They were used to propel nails by striking them against the inside of a anvil while the hammer was held down by the fist. By 1875, there were more than 20 gun hammersmiths in Poplar Bluff. The most popular type of hammer at that time was the "droophammer." This type had a large metal droop on top that allowed it to be easily swung around for striking nails with either hand. Hammermakers also made specialty hammers for different purposes such as mining and construction. In 1903, the town of Poplar Bluff passed an ordinance recognizing Handgunsmithing as an official trade within the town limits. This act gave rise to what is now known as "Gun Hammer Day" each year on May 22nd in memory of those who have helped make Gun Hammering into an important part of Poplar Bluff's heritage.

In 1870, parts of Newton County were annexed to Jackson County; so Poplar Bluff became part of Jackson County also. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which is land and is water. The river forms most of Poplar Bluff's border with Jackson County to the south-southeast and east-northeast; its banks are high enough that major flooding events have not occurred since settlers arrived in this area over two hundred years ago (although there have been some minor floods).

The town was destroyed by a storm before it could be settled and its remains are today buried under buildings in downtown National City. In 1831, Indian traders discovered coal deposits near Poplar Bluff and began to mine them. In 1839, Wm. Tipton erected an adobe house at what is now Poplar Bluff for himself and his family. By 1840, about 60 people lived in Poplar Bluff with three stores and six tanneries. The first post office was established at Poplar Bliff on February 14, 1850; it remained open until 1861 when it was moved to Springfield because of population growth there. During the Civil War (1861–1865), PoplarBluffs residents raised money for General Ulysses S Grant's army through taxes they collected on their farms and businesses within Confederate territory during the war effort – something that would become common among Midwesterners throughout much of the war years due to fears that slavery would be restored should Union forces gain control over all or part of their states. The local school district closed down during World War II after enrolling too many students from Illinois instead of Missouri; however, one small business still operates as a grocery store near Main Street today known as Grits' Grocery Store Inc., which operated from 1922-1997 thanks to donations by Mrs. Grits (Nancy Gertrude Slauson). Afterward, many farmers left rural areas for larger cities such as St Louis because they found more opportunities there while others joined manufacturing jobs along Interstate 55/I-70 east of town or new towns formed along these routes such as Granite City east of town then rapidly grew out into surrounding counties including Scott County to create what is now Ozark Country about 30 miles west across I-70 from where PoplarBluffs once stood
