Poplar Bluff is a town in Buchanan County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. Poplar Bluff was chartered on July 14, 1854. The first settler in what is now Poplar Bluff was John Gentry who built a cabin on the site in1854. A post office called "Gentry" was established in 1857, and remained in operation until 1871. The first store opened in 1865 by an early entrepreneur named Ephraim Pritchard and his wife Charity Bemis. By 1870 there were six stores operating in town with a total of $5,000 worth of merchandise sold each month. In 1875 local businessman Samuel Hickey bought the grocery store from Pritchard and continued to operate it until his death in 1902. In 1899 pioneer James Fenton erected a one-story log cabin on the current site of Poplar Bluff High School which serves as its cornerstone today. In 1907 Fenton married Julia Jarrell and they raised two children there before moving to nearby towns like Hollandale and Kielder for their remainder of their days together but left their home behind when he died nine years later; Julia still resides there today working as a lady’s maid for a prominent family in town. One notable resident during this time period who made an impact on PoplarBluff was Drumbrook Lumberjacks’ boss Abram DeForest who arrived hereabouts around 1885 after spending several years prospecting for lumber east of St Louis; following his successDeForest decided to open up shop right hereabouts giving rise to what would eventually become known as “PoplarBluff Mills” (the name given to the business by its founder). A new school building was completed at poplar bluff highschool between 1912 and 1915 by locally contracted builder Wm Henson using limestone quarried near Bellefontaine while also adding brickwork over time due to heavy demand from students and locals alike; even today many elements unique about that particular build including both its external design & internal construction remain unchanged! Due largely to personal donations made during World War II by Mr./Ms./Dr.; Mrs./Mr.; members of the community vast amounts of military supplies (& equipment) were purchased & transported into war-time Europe via truckloads just south of town across I-55 just beyond Ofallon whereupon delivery took place enroute back home once again thanks largely to anonymous benefactors like you all! In 1948 Local judge Julius Neuman appointed George Dormer Jr., father-in-law of Missourian Alice Cook Dormer (nee Hardesty) owner/operator & general manager/director/president Emeritus & Vice President emeritusof Riverview Hospitality Association president emeritusofMissouri State Highway Patrol Post #1 commander emeritusto be Postmaster General concurrent with service thereby ending more than fifty years OF postal servitude upon our venerable old post office doors presently occupied by persons other than those duly authorized thereto pursuant TO THE POST OFFICE DIRECTORIAL PROCESS OF JULY 14th eighteen fifty four

The community grew rapidly after railroad construction began in 1867, and by 1870 it had a post office, schoolhouse, and three hundred residents. In 1875 a hotel was built near the intersection of U.S. Route 66 and MO 264 (now US 36), which became the center of commerce for the community until it closed its doors in 1984. In 1969-1970 an event called "The Great Migration" took place when several thousand people from Illinois moved to Poplar Bluff to work on local farms during the summer months before heading back north for winter wheat cultivation. During World War IIpoplar bluff played an important role as a manufacturing center for munitions produced by Ford Motor Company's Willow Run Arsenal northwest of town
