By 1907, when Missouri statehood was granted to Kansas Territory, Beaversville had become one of two towns in that territory (the other being Independence). In 1914, when Poplar Bluff got its own post office (from BEaverville), it became one of only two towns in Missouri without ZIP code 57310 due to its small size relative to larger cities like St. Louis or Kansas City—the other town having been Platte City (#56910). Poplar Bluff is a small town in Clay County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The history of Poplar Bluff begins with the arrival of Europeans in what is now Clay County in 1784. A post office called "Poplar Bluff" was established in 1853, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1876, a man named Eli Lilly and Co. built a mill on the bluffs overlooking the confluence of the Arkansas River and Clear Creek. The mill continued to operate until 1958 when it was bought by Monsanto Company and closed down. In that year, Monsanto also donated land to be used for an agricultural research center which still occupies part of the property today. The first settlers who lived here were people from Ohio who came overland during the American Civil War to help fight for independence from Great Britain. Many of these men settled down here after they got back home and started families; one such family was the Sillys who founded Poplar Bluff Station on May 4, 1865. They operated a wagon train service between this station and St Louis bringing goods upriver to market before returning empty-handed each day back across Missouri river crossings as part of their route to get food for their families back home on the other side of Independence Rock! During World War II many residents worked at Ford Motor Company's Willow Run plant located just east of Poplar Bluff; however most residents left once armament production began at Oak Ridge National Laboratory some 10 miles away near Marshalltown (now Three Rivers). After war ended many veterans returned home but soon found out there were no jobs available for them here so they headed north again into dark times known as "the depression." By 1948 about 60% or all those living here had left since poplars only grows sporadically throughout these hard times! However within 5 years or so things changed again as oil prices soared thanks largely to OPEC while President Truman reopened factories all around America creating more good paying jobs! Poplar Bluff is a town in Clay County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settler in what is now Poplar Bluff was David Levy in 1837. Levy built a cabin on the bluffs and named it "Poplar Bluff". In 1839, he married Anna Caldwell and they started a small farm near present-day Poplar Bluff. The couple had two children: Johnathan and Anna Caldwell Levy. In 1840, David Levy sold his farm to Nicholas Sievers who moved his family to Poplar Bluff in 1845. After the death of Nicholas Sievers' wife in 1850, Anna Caldwells son James took over the farmstead and continued to run it until 1862 when he sold it to Isaac Hensley. After that, the land passed through several hands before becoming part of the current community of PoplarBluff. "In 1861", Isaac Hensley donated land for an academy which would eventual become Grinnell College. When Grinnell College opened its doors in 1865,poplar bluff became one of its first students." During World War I,poplar bluff served as an assembly point for military supplies coming into Missouri from Illinois." In 1922,poplar bluff incorporated as a town under the name "Bluffs". It remained that name until 1955 when it changed back to "PoplarBluff" after being approved byClay County Board of Commissioners."
