A post office called Poplar Bluff was established in 1839, and remained in operation until 1906. WhenKansas City was founded as a city in 1865, most of what is now Harrison County became part of that city; however, some eastern portions of Harrison County including PoplarBluff were included within Clay county until it was organized as a separate county on November 3, 1907. According to the 2010 census, there are 553 people living in Poplar Bluff Township: 427 men and 222 women; 288 children under age 18; and 38ager adults over 65 years old. The average household size is 2.54 and the average family size is 3.12

In 1878, three brothers named Daniel, George and Isaac built a log cabin near present day Poplar Bluff on land they had obtained from the state for $3 per acre (equivalent to $ in ). They called their cabin "Higgins". For many years, Poplar Bluff was just a farming community with few residents other than those who lived closest to Higgins Cabin. In 1902, when Stonington Township was created within Springfield Township,poplar bluff became one of its first townships. As development increased in Springfield Township and elsewhere within eastern Missouri,poplar bluff emerged as an important commercial center based on its location at the junction of several major Routes 66 and 71 highways. With this growth came more traffic and development into poplar bluff than ever before; by 1910 there were over 30 businesses located in town alone! However, through most of the 20th century poplar bluff continued to experience significant economic decline due to numerous factors including dwindling population numbers, competition from larger towns nearby and continuous technological advances which made agriculture less necessary for local families. However, recent progress has seen poplarBluff slowly begin to recover with new retail businesses opening up along with some revitalization projects such as resurfacing streets and adding new sidewalks throughout town
Poplar Bluff, Missouri was founded in 1836 by the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The town flourished for a time until it was destroyed by a fire in 1853. Poplar Bluff regained its popularity after it became the site of an agricultural fair in 1863.
