The Landing had a store and a post office. In 1886, the town was renamed Poplar Bluff after poplar trees that were being grown in the area at that time. The first school was built in 1889, and it became the first public school in Jackson County. The first courthouse was built in 1893, and it served as the county seat until 1909 when Joplin arrived and took over that role. After Joplin's death, Poplar Bluff continued to serve as county seat until 1915 when it was moved to Joplin because of its proximity to that city's businesses. The first churches were built in Poplar Bluff around this time, including one on Academy Road which still stands today. These early churches helped support many local residents during their times of need such as during the Great Depression when there wasn't much money available for anything other than food stamps or buying cigarettes from convenience stores. After World War II ended, people began moving back into Poplar Bluffs from all over the country due to various reasons such as new jobs opportunities or better housing options elsewhere. Many of these new residents formed what is now known as the "Old timers" community which is made up of people who have lived here since before things started booming around here like doctor shops or general stores sprang up all throughout town center like they do today! Many things have changed since then such as population growth rates which has led to more economic development happening within walking distance of our town center; however, some things haven't changed at all such as social norms where men no longer typically wear pants outside while women often wear long skirts!

Poplar Bluff is located in the Ozarks of Missouri. The town was founded by Ephraim White in 1836 and named for poplar trees that were found near the town site. The first settler in Poplar Bluff was John Gibson, who built a cabin on the banks of the Arkansas River. By 1839, Poplar Bluff had a small population of about twenty-five people. In 1847, James Ketchum purchased land from Ephraim White and laid out a new town at the site of present-day Poplar Bluff. Ketchum renamed his new settlement "Poplar Bluffs" in honor of his purchase. In 1865, Union soldiers burned down part of Ketchum's building to prevent him from using it as a headquarters during the Battle of Springfield. After the war, most residents left PoplarBluff for other settlements in central Missouri. A few remained until the early 1900s when they all moved away again due to advances in transportation and communication technologies. Today, only traces remain of what once was an important community in central Missouri
