He named it for his cousin, Colonel James Poplar, who served as a delegate to the Continental Congress from Kentucky and then Maryland. Boone's familyowned land here until 1836 when it passed to John Crawford Chilton and his wifeElizabeth Chilton after they married into the Crawford family of Lebanon, Kentucky. Elizabeth's great-grandmother had been born here in 1814 and her father had come to live here in 1827 when he was appointed county judge by Governor Thomas Fordyce Ferguson ofMissouri. In 1840, during the American Civil War, local men volunteered with General Joseph Eickhorn's Confederate army against Union forces under Abraham Lincoln; many were killed or wounded on either side during that conflict. After the war ended, most of these men returned home but a few decided to stay on their farms past 1865 because there wasn't much work available for settlers after the end of slavery in America. In 1865, General Order No 12 ordered all white Settlers must leave by November 1st; some did so before that date while others left over time as travel became more difficult due to partisan warfare between Northern and Southern units throughout America which continued until 1865 even though federal troops had withdrawn from most parts of America by thenvirtually everywhere except for Tennessee which remained Union territory under military occupation pending decision by Congress whether to admit black Americans into that state as citizens or not In 1870s two families started building homes around what is now downtown Poplar Bluff; one called themselves The Fords while another called themselves The Walls because they were only allowed two rooms each inside their homes without any other type of decoration or furniture inside them other than chairs and tables which they put together themselves out front using saplings and branches cut from nearby trees

Poplar Bluff, Missouri was founded on November 4, 1836 by the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The town was named for Poplar Grove in Kentucky. When the expedition reached the Missouri River on October 12, 1839, they made their first discovery of oil well near what is now Poplar Bluff.
