The first post office was established in 1828, and named for Abram Brougham. Poplar Bluff became a city in 1907. In that year, it merged with nearby Lawrence to form the new city of Kansas City. Poplar Bluff has been home to several professional sports teams since its incorporation into the city of Kansas City: The Chiefs (1907-present), Royals (1910-present), Blues (1997-2004), Wizards (2005-present) and Storms (1996-2001). The city government also operates two public schools: High School #2 and Clinton Elementary School. In addition, about 30 businesses operate within Poplar Bluff limits; most are small shops that serve local residents or customers who are working locally or nearby businesses. Grant's army crossed the Missouri River at Poplar Bluff and besieged Grand Forks east of Great Falls (now Little Rock), Kansas Territory. When Grant's force reached its destination on April 9th and 10th, he ordered his forces to retreat back across the river to Topeka where they were able to purchase supplies before finally crossing back into Kansas Territory on April 12th.
